1 out of 5 stars So frustrating   July 28, 2008

I need accounting software to tally my wasted hours.

Despite the fact that every entry in the software matches my bank statement exactly each month, my YNAB register balance can be off by as much as $3,000. It's completely inexplicable.

I have entered "balance adjustments" only to find that the problem recurs the following month. I have even asked my husband to review the register against the bank statement in hopes that he would see some massive mistake I was making. Nothing. There is just some bug in the software that makes it useless.

Writing to YNAB has yielded no advice. Don't buy this software.

2 out of 5 stars Not sure why this is #1   June 26, 2008

Im not sure why this budget software is number one on amazon. I bought it because the reviews said it was great and was better then quicken and money. I thought I would recieve it in a box with directions on how to use it. Nope. All I got was a DVD case with a number sticker on the front of the plastic wrap that I almost threw away (it didnt say that it was important to using it until I installed it). Then once I had it installed I had to go on the website and down load the upgraded version because it wasnt the newest or whatever. It was $5 so I did it anyways. Didnt notice a difference. There were no directions on how to use the thing. There is a help section that you can print out on your own printer (paying for your own ink and paper) that is about 50 pages long. Yes it is simple...very simple almost to plain for me. The register didnt work with downloading from my bank online so i input everything by hand. The budgeting tool is a joke. when you enter an amount you budget for it puts you in the negitve and it is all very confusing...would help if it came with directions. I find it a waste of my money and I wish I could return it. Most pointless 40 bucks I have ever spent. I wish I would have tried money at least it has been around a while. Long story short...save your money and try something that have been around a little longer.

4 out of 5 stars The best budgeting methodology out there   May 23, 2008

I've used Quicken for over 10 years (and still do) but Quicken (and similar personal finance software) is absolutely incapable of doing budgeting. YNAB does budgeting beautifully and fills this glaring gap. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because YNAB reporting capabilities are very limited.

This is the most stupid and useless software I have ever seen. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Software & Methodology in one package!   May 21, 2008

I found this software through a budgeting forum, and tried it out. I wasn't expecting much - I've used an Excel spreadsheet, Quicken & Mvelopes before, and didn't have much "success" with them. Those programs worked fine, but I needed to BUDGET my finances, not track where I spent my money after the fact. So, I bought this program, and after a bit of reading (there's a great guide) and surfing their forums for help, I got it figured out! Now, I've got my life budgeted - I can spend money on the fun things in life without worrying that I'm taking money away from something important (you know, like mortgage, car loan, etc.) because I saved for it.

Just a FYI - because the program is based off of the common sense "rules" that the developer created, it might take a bit before you have that lightbulb moment... And, the program isn't designed to let you blissfully automate your spending - you NEED to track your money, and be more aware if you're going over your budgeted amounts.
