Upgrade to Quicken 2004 instead September 4, 2004 44 out of 48 found this review helpful
It is infuriating that Intuit removed QIF support and requires that we upgrade every three years. They cannot make a better product that we will want to buy, so they have imposed these unnecessary changes simply to make us pay again. This version was judged one of the "Tech Turkeys" of 2005 by CNET [...] For these reasons I purchased Quicken Deluxe 2004 instead of 2005, and here is my review of 2004:
I upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2004 from Quicken Deluxe 2001 on a one-year-old Dell laptop running Win XP Professional. All of my data, from 1996, and settings were converted with no problems, including existing saved reports. The program appears to run about as fast as the 2001 version on my laptop.
The only reason I upgraded is that Intuit will stop supporting account downloads for my 2001 version this year, and I was able to get a copy of the 2004 version from a seller on Amazon for about $10. Compared to 2001 there is nothing new in this version that I need, and some elements (like the budget) are harder to use or require more mouse clicks to find and use. The bottom line is that Intuit is requiring an unnecessary upgrade to a good product just to make more money. This is a sleazy practice. If they had allowed me to continue using 2001 for account downloads by paying a reasonable fee (like Norton Antivirus) I would have paid it and kept using 2001.
Intuit tells you in its letters and on its website, when indicating you need to upgrade in order to continue downloading account information, that you need to upgrade to the latest version (2005). That is not true. Upgrading to an older version (2004 in this case) costs much less and allows you to continue downloading for a few more years. Also, by buying an older version you get the latest "fixes" the first time you download data, which should correct most of the bugs that other users have complained about.
Quicken 2005 - DOA September 3, 2004 40 out of 41 found this review helpful
I was an early adopter of Quicken back in 1992 when you could get the program to fit on one floppy disk. I bought the program every year even though most of the upgrades were minor, the main advantage was improved transaction downloads. Now with their latest upgrade 2005 they have taken a huge step backwards. My credit union and 2 of my Banks no longer work to import transactions. When I called my bank and credit union they told me the following. "This is something that we have looked at doing previously, and unfortunately not enough members use the Quicken export feature to make the cost for adding the OFX export feature feasible at this time. We currently recommend using a previous version of Quicken or switching to Microsoft Money. Microsoft Money provides this export feature for free to financial institutions with online banking services. We can only hope that Intuit will realize that their pricing strategy is making them lose market share to Microsoft Money. Best regards,"
My Banker went one step farther and offered to buy me the latest version of Money. Apparently Quicken has managed to really piss my bank off.
So alas, I must change, I refuse to lose the ability to download these transactions. My suggestion is don't buy this program unless Quicken turns from the dark side! Returning the program for a refund has been no picnic.
I gave quicken one more shot to keep me as a customer September 1, 2004 42 out of 43 found this review helpful
But, it didn't work out. I purchased 2005 hoping it would fix my number of problems from Q2004. This was not to be the case. Long story short, I lost over 5 hours of my time on the phone with "Tech support" in India, I was finally able to speak with a specialist with Intuit who informed my there was nothing wrong with my file and they could not figure out the issue. I went through far too much with Q2004 and don't want to deal with the program anymore. I have returned Q2005 and will buy money when it comes out in a few weeks. This is all too bad as I really liked quicken, but the simple fact is, its a bad program with far too many bugs for this former beta tester and user of over 11 years.
Loss of QIF import August 31, 2004 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
Quicken 2004 will be my last purchase of the Series. When importing a QIF file , they do warn you that Quicken 2005 will not import QIF. My credit union uses the QIF. SO DO I. I've never gotten used to MS Money, but that looks like the way I will eventually have to go. Only 8% of my credit unions downloads are QIF driven, so they will not upgrade to Quicken's new standard. Too expensive and I don't blame them.
This Upgrade Removes Features August 31, 2004 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
I have been a loyal Quicken user for 10 years so when I upgraded to Quicken 2005 I was shocked to find out that I could no longer download transactions from my bank using the QIF format. When I went online to determine what I could do about it I found a web page suggesting that I move to another bank ... well I found a better solution!! I am moving to another software program ... my recommendation DON'T BUY THIS CRAPPY UPGRADE ... I for one am moving to Microsoft Money.
