You must be a MS shill or a cheapskate March 16, 2005 3 out of 19 found this review helpful
I've been a Quicken user since 1999. I upgraded to 2003 and now to 2005. I vehemently disagree with the reviewers who give this product a very negative review. While I agree a little with their gripes about Intuit's "greediness", Intuit has to make a living. I LOVE that they discontinued QIF so now eveyone has to support the waaaaaay better WebConnect format. I have a positive view of Intuit's products and I truly believe that the problem the reviewers' here have sits somewhere between the chair and the keyboard. Go to Microsoft Money? At least Intuit got their dominant market share without using illegal tactics. To quote Mr T: I pity the fool who jumps ship and goes to Money. It's like jumping from the kettle to the frying pan. Quicken and Turbo Tax are good products, they could be better in some ways, but they perform admirably.
Amazingly bad software March 8, 2005 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I wish I'd read these reviews first. I'm in shock after trying to install and use Quicken 2005, the highest-rated in its category on CNet. It's the worst piece of ---- I've paid money for in years, and the most frustrating. There doesn't seem to be any way to download transactions from my Citibank bank account without paying an additional $10/month and waiting 10 days for the privilege. It no longer imports QIF files, only OFX. Except there's no option to import OFX files. The help files are vague and have links to the web that generate 404s for more information. The instructions they include point to things that don't exist in the program. I have wasted an hour of my evening trying to get it to download some transactions without success. At least in MS Money you could just do it and it worked. This is unbelievable.
Quicken 2005 a major disappointment March 7, 2005 I would note, in addition to the long list of problems mentioned by other Amazon reviewers, that Quicken 2005 has made unfortunate changes in the way investment data is entered. Instead of the intuitive ledger-type format of earlier versions, each investment entry has now to be "edited" through its own pop-up screen. Transfers now have to be done in two steps (first buy or sell, then transfer the proceeds to the account you want...).
Stay with your earlier version, and hope Intuit can be pressured into revamping this dog before the workable versions are "sunset"!
Not Software... It's a Subscription March 3, 2005 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've been using Quicken since back in the days when they were practically giving it away to establish a toehold in the industry. My how times have changed.
Now as the undisputed leader, they've reversed strategies, and it's the customers who have to pay. This is no longer a software product, this is a subscription, as evidenced by their "sunset" policy of requiring upgrades in order to access data from your own bank accounts.
I'm extremely bitter about being forced to upgrade. I'm ready to bail for the first software alternative which will allow me to export my existing Quicken data. Unfortunately, however,Intuit has a virtual monopoly with their online banking support. If there's a bright side to this, perhaps their recent heavy-handed tactics will encourage an open non-Intuit standard for online banking.
If you're not currently an INTUIT customer, avoid this like the plague, or you'll continue to pay again and again.
The Love/Hate Relationship Between Intuit and Q5 Customers February 27, 2005 36 out of 37 found this review helpful
Whether you will love or hate the new Q2005 depends on which financial institutions you use and how well your software installation goes. If you only download from one financial institution, and it is a large nationwide bank, and your installation goes well, you will probably be happy with the new Quicken upgrade.
However, Intuit has switched file formats and bill-payment companies. Those of you who presently use earlier versions and have successfully downloaded data from multiple financial institutions into Quicken will probably find that one or more of your accounts won't automatically update any more. In addition, if you loved the customer service you received from CheckFree, prepare to be disappointed in Metavante, the new bill-payment service that you will be "upgraded" to when you install Q2005.
But if you have problems, as I estimate about half of users have, the worst thing you will experience is not the two-week downtime or the manual entry of your financial data; the worst thing will be the arrogance of the customer service you will receive from Intuit and Metavante.
You will be told, over and over, that only a "handfull" of customers are dissatisfied and that tens of thousands have gone through the process successfully and without problems - this in spite of the fact that Quicken 2005 has a 1 1/3 star rating (out of 5) here on Amazon.
You will also learn that Metavante will not return e-mails and will answer your call with "customer service" people, not techs, who will then try to relay your info to the techincal assistance department, who will then relay a prospective solution back to the "customer service" people, who will then send you a form-letter e-mail instructing you to call back and talk to a new "customer service" person, who will then put you on hold, look up the technical department's response, read it to you and then listen while you explain that the proposed solution was already tried previously. The "customer service" person will then tell you that he or she will re-contact the technical support people and be back in contact with you at a later time, meaning that you will again get a form-letter e-mail instructing you to call back, afterwhich you will wait on hold, talk to another customer service representative..... well you get my point.
This process will continue until you give up, call Quicken and convince them to give you the instructions to uninstall Q2005 and reinstall Q2004, afterwhich you will have to manually enter your data, since Metavante won't work with Q2004, and CheckFree won't be available after March 1st, 2005.
Some of us here on Amazon find this "upgrade" extremely disappointing, since we have been vocal advocates of Intuit, Quicken, and Checkfree for over a decade. Now we find out that we cannot get the benefits that we have grown accustomed to, and that as of March 1st, 2005 we cannot use ANY Quicken with CheckFree, no matter how much we are willing to pay.
Today is February 27th, 2005, and I still don't know what to do. My only advice is to wait to purchase Q2005 until after Intuit addresses all of their problems. Based on the experience detailed here on Amazon, I would guess that you have about a 50-50 chance of having a successful installation and being able to download your transactions into the software - slightly better than the odds of winning in Vegas.
