1 out of 5 stars doesn't work   October 10, 2008

This o6 quickbooks asked me to register, it needed the phone number and postcode of the prior owner. I didn't have that so I called in to be informed by Intuit that Amazon is not supposed to sell used copies of quickbooks, and they have an agreement to this effect. My quickbooks is inoperable. $70 down the tubes. boo!!!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time and money, it's a nightmare for everyone.   January 23, 2008
We have used QuickBooks 2006 since it came out at our business, and it is in every way a piece of junk.

- Idiotic default location for your crucial accounting data--are you ready for this? C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTUIT\QUICKBOOKS 2006. That's right. Not in c:\documents and settings\You\QuickBooks Data... where it might get BACKED UP. Not even in "c:\QuickBooks Accounting Data" like a cheesy Win 3.1 app might choose. IT STORES YOUR PRECIOUS DATA IN WITH THE PROGRAM! So that if you perhaps decide to reinstall the program completely (which is often necessary) and delete that folder, you're hosed. Of course, you can decide to store your data in a more sane location, but it's still horrible that they leave that as the default so unsophisticated users will use it that way.
- Script errors prevent the Help feature from being useful, they stop you from doing anything.
- Network support is ridiculously stupid. The client "pretends" to "open" the "quickbooks file" on the server, when what's really going on is it's making a connection to a database running on the server. While it sounds neat to hide what's really going on and keep the users thinking that they're "opening a file," they screwed it up and it's a royal pain to administer. If they weren't asinine, they'd simply detect copies of QuickBooks running on your LAN that you have designated "server machines" and let you connect to said machine.
- Intuit support is not very bright when troubleshooting their heinously complex software
- Lots of strange error messages that really mean something completely different
- Updates take hours. we decided to stop applying the updates at R9P, but they're up to at least the R10P on QB2006. When you download the latest update it runs through about 10 times doing each intermediate update. Sometimes the updates fail without a good explanation. If you don't update all your clients at the same time, it can break everything.
- They make it hard to find the older updates on their site, so you are forced to update to the most recent update (on every machine, remember!) just because you had to reinstall on one machine and can't find the updater for the previous release.
- They make you call them every time you install it.
- They make it very hard to change the serial number you are using (in a company with many copies of the software running, this is a BIG deal since each serial can only be logged in once to your company file). Say you have 5 users in your accounting department, but only 3 of them use QuickBooks, you really only need 3 licenses legally. Now say you decide to have "User#4" take over the QB duties from "User#1." You're looking at a full uninstall/reinstall (90 minutes minimum!) just to change "User#4"'s key to the one freed up by User#1. If they weren't jerks, they would let you use the same key for all your seats and that key is valid for up to X number of concurrent uses. Then all your clients use the same key!
- They won't sell you another seat license for 2006 anymore (OH YOU TOTALLY NEED QUICKBOOKS 2009 NOW!!! Like that won't be more bloated and horrible!) through their site anymore so you have to scrounge around on Amazon like this to find another serial--OR face upgrading EVERYONE to a new version that nobody wants just so you can add 1 seat.
- And the #1 problem with it? It's SLOW AS MOLASSES! Prepare to go get a cup of coffee while it loads, even on nice hardware. What a waste of money and time it was to buy QuickBooks.

I previously wrote a review when I hadn't received the product for 30 days.

Tech for Less fixed the situation and even paid for the shipping.

I would purchase items in the future from Tech for Less.
