Fun team warfare November 7, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the first games I've bought for pc in years, and I'm loving it. Even since Half Life 1 and Team Fortress I've been looking for a good team based first person shooter with different character classes. There are several character classes to choose from in this game, each of which has different abilities and options. Each of them is fairly easy to get going with, though it took a little while to learn how to use some of the abilities. While you can play each class as you like, an experience system is built in to actually enhance your characters as you perform well. There's a depth to this game that isn't apparent at first. The experience system is very cool, and I recommend you read up on it online. When performing well, your character actually improves, and sometimes gets new abilities. The game is played in 'campaigns', which consist of 3 levels each. The idea is that by the time you get to the third level, you'll have gained enough experience to kick some serious butt. Assuming you play well, that is. One of the things that seems to really help, and which of course helps you win missions, is team play. You really have to play each level several times to get a grip on all the different objectives, and you'll find it works best if you play your part all the way through, and don't just always try to be the one to complete all objectives. Playing support characters, such as medics, can be pretty rewarding, and can definitely change the tide of the battle.
Another cool thing is that if you're playing on the right server (they're marked), all your stats are recorded and available online. You can check to see how you stack up in various categories, and there are medals to be earned for completing objectives.
The latest update to the game added VOIP support, so you can talk to team members directly. It doesn't seem to be used all that much yet, but already I'm seeing it add a new level to the game, as it's much easier to organize attacks.
Starting with the latest update, however the game and my firewall no longer get along. I'm constantly disabling it/enabling it to get into the game. This is really annoying, and I haven't found a workaround (I've tried adding it to safe programs, etc...)
I'm hoping that some new levels will be available for download at some point. Each level is pretty big and really takes time to master, but I think in a few months I'll want some fresh air.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a great mix of games all in one November 3, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This game is so much fun to work as a team if you have the team to do it with. It brings me back to the days of the Tribes series with more sufficient ways to dealing with communication between teammates. If Tribes ever merged with this game we would have the best game ever made.
not as good as i expected October 31, 2007 2 out of 14 found this review helpful
This was not what i expected, the grafics is nice but not really a new relvolution and the taktics and new level of teamplay they talked so much about is practicly non existent. The stearing of figures and vehicles is ok but nothing special. So its no wonder that i was a bit dissapointed when i finaly got the game on my pc. But there r good points too, i like the fact the both side have different vehicles and weapons and that the game i running very good on my not so new pc (Pentium 3,0 GHz / Nvidea 6700XL).
My conclusion, this game is only for Quake fans and Clan Players and not for mr. averrage and instance gamers. So its not a real contender for Battlefield 2142, the current leader of egoshooters.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory for the 21st Century October 25, 2007 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
There was a lot of prerelease spin for this game, and some of it was apt. Splash Damage has taken Wofenstein-ET with the Doom 3 engine and the Quake plot line, pumped the grpx engine full of visual steroids but sent the writers and creative consultants home way too early. The game has really nice eye candy, and runs well on my notebook (nice surprise) but I was honestly expecting more plot and more 'Meat' to this newest addition to the Quake family. Maybe it was just me but, from what I was reading, prior to release I got the impression that this game was going to give us a lot of 'back-story' and the reason we 'Went to War' (hehehe) in Quake 3. Unfortunately, this game (like the reasons WE were given for going to war) fall far short of the commitment that WE gamers usually make in a title. Bottom line; this game can be a nice reminder of Wolfenstein-ET, but will not stay long in you game rotation.
great even on mediocre hardware October 6, 2007 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm running this game on an older machine and it plays very well. I'll describe the specs of my PC running Win XP:
Athlon XP 3200 (downclocked to 2500 because I have chintzy ram) ATI X800 All-in-Wonder video card 1 GB of ram Cable modem
I'm able to play the game at 1280 by 1024 and get 20fps while playing online. Many people will probably consider this unacceptable, but it works for me.
The game is really new, so a lot of the people playing online have no idea of what they should be doing in terms of the objectives, etc. Fortunately, the XP reward system in the game should motivate people to actually play the required player classes to complete obectives. I get sick of public Enemy Territory (pre-Quake Wars game) servers where everyone wants to snipe.
The maps bundled with the game are stunning. The strogg (alien team) have more technological advantages than humans in the game, so I can see people wanting to always play that side. So far as yet, I haven't encountered any bugs in the game.
