Windows only machines will soon be obsolete December 21, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Parallels was a God send the moment it hit the net. I've been running this software since its inception on an Intel Mac and I see no real reason why anyone should consider purchasing a Windows only machine. Run Windows and Linux at "near native" speed. Personally, Parallels + my main Mac Pro machine boots and runs faster and more stable than any Windows computer I have ever owned.
The latest beta releases includes a "coherence" mode which allows users to run Window applications outside of the Windows desktop environment.
This product saves me a lot of money December 7, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I used to have a dedicated Linux box and a Windows machine. With Parallels Desktop, I only need one iMac to do the job. The tools and drivers comes with the software is great. If you are using windows, you can move out your mouse just like you move out from a regular window. I like the manual that comes with the software. It is difficult to find such a good quality manual book in any computer sofware nowadays.
An invaluable work-in-progress December 6, 2006 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
Parallels has great potential -- and it almost lives up to the hype. When I first bought it, the install from the CD didn't work on my new core 2 duo iMac. But after I downloaded the updated version, it installed fine. Since then, the only problem I've had is I can't print to my HP USB printer. A new update was just released which supposedly fixes the problem, but I haven't installed it yet.
If you're not worried about running video-intensive games, Parallels can handle just about anything you throw at it. I've installed Word, ZoneAlarm, and Time Matters (legal billing software) without a single hiccup.
I noticed some complaints in other reviews about tech support for Parallels. Their staff has always answered my e-mails, though it usually takes a few days. The user forums at the Parallels website, though, are tremendously helpful. A patient and moderately-experienced user can find a solution to just about any problem by searching the forum archives or posting a question.
I have no doubt that in a few months Parallels really will live up to its hype. In the meantime, it's still a tremendously useful tool for Mac users.
Guest OS's are limited... December 3, 2006 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was very impressed with the ease of installation of Parallels. I easily had Fedora and Vista RC1 going quickly. No problems on the Macbook (2GHz / 2GB RAM).
However, Parallels only allows for light use of the guest operating system. In other words, works great for internet browsing. I expected to be able to drag files from one desktop to the other in which Parallels doesn't support. You have to transfer through the virtual network Parallels sets up between Mac OSX and the guest operating system. Even 2GB of RAM and 768MB of RAM for Vista wasn't enough for Vista to play an mp3 or movie.
I would expect this program to be more valuable to a programmer than an everyday user. I expected to be able to work with some of the media programs available to Windows users (movie editing, music, dvd rippers, whatever), but found that none of this would be possible.
Give the trial some good time before purchasing Parallels.
XP aborts November 28, 2006 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had parallels working just fine for about two weeks, running Windows XP. It was great. Around November 11, I received an update to parallels which may or may not have installed (who knows?). Subsequently when I tried to run my VM, windows XP attempts ot boot up and then immediately stops. Even in safe mode, it aborts, and returns to the VM. As others have experienced the "support" provided by parallels is a one-way street. My email went unanswered. This is a great idea missing something in the execution.
