4 out of 5 stars The software is excellent but the headphones suck.   January 5, 2007

NaturallySpeaking is just perfect. I was able to do my Write A Novel in a Month faster and more accurate. However, the headphone that came with the software suck. They are by far the smallest, tightest headphones I have ever worn. I had a headache the lasted a week. They could be used as a form of torture. There wasn't a comfortable postion that could be found for that "thing". I emailed the company for a better headset and they suggested a wireless bluetooth headset. The most expensive, of course. I lucked up and use the headset from AOL.

Let me first say that I think the recent advance in speech recognition is amazing. It is, however, easy to buy the wrong product simply out of ignorance. I advise you to read the small print on the NUANCE site and call them if you have questions. Insist on getting all the information and double check it. I was misled twice by Nuance customer service.

I ordered the standard version from Amazon thinking it was a bargain. Now, even though it works very well, I discovered that the "preferred version" in French would allow me to dictate in English as well as French. Since I am writing a dissertation in both languages, this would have been the better choice. It also has better options than the standard version.

When I wrote to Nuance customer service, I was told that I could upgrade. In fact, the problem is that there is no way to upgrade to a preferred version from standard. It is a different product. Now I have to buy a new stand alone preferred version.

Take time to pick the right product for your needs. This is the better bargain.

Bon courage from an American in Paris

I had tried Dragon NaturallySpeaking a few years ago and wasn't too impressed because of the number of errors recorded but the latest verion is truly amazing. After just a few minutes of training, I was up and running pretty much error free. A really nice product.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product once trained   January 2, 2007

My experience with Dragon9 has been very positive. The software recognizes much of the medical terminology I use without problems. Words not in its vocabulary are easy to add and are then very reliably recognized. Though the software features are so complete that it could definitely be used by someone with disabilities to control their computer+mouse entirely by voice, I find the best method is to use the mouse normally to move the cursor around within a document and even the keyboard occasionally for equations, numbers or certain abbreviations. It's just easier to type HLA-DR25 or something than to say "cap H cap L cap A hyphen cap D cap R numeral 2 numeral 5". However some common abbreviations are recognized by the software and don't require this.

For anything else the software dramatically increases the speed and ease of producing text. The only negative in my mind is that I can no longer listen to music without headphones while creating a document. Small price to pay. Great software.

3 out of 5 stars I had planned to buy it, but...   January 1, 2007

Working on a Master's degree, I wanted to increase my productivity studying and less time typing, but it seems that writing the papers could be realistically more productive than talking to the computer.

There seemed to be more negative comments than positive, and while some people may be technologically challenged, I'd rather save the money, and rely on good old-fashioned methods.

As the old adage goes, "anything worth doing, is worth doing yourself".
