A major step forward... April 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I admit it. I didn't initially buy this product because I wanted to... I did it because I had to. Before acquiring MS Office Home & Student 2007 I was quite happy using Word 97. Unfortunately obsolescence had gotten to the point of where it was absolutely essential that I upgrade; too many important attachments coming in written in 2003 and the new 2007 formats that couldn't be open or read. So when I got an opening in my schedule I ordered this and took my software to the next level.
Though there is a bit of a learning curve in adapting to the new software, I couldn't be happier with the new Word and Power Point programs, and the '07 Excel is proving to be quite the improved workhorse too, (especially the easy to use graphics and tables). Overall everything has been put together to be just that much more user-friendly and intuitively organized. There's little I can't figure out how to do in just a minute or two or trial and error, and as a novice in computers that's a big plus on my scorecard. But one of the best features for me was the option to save Word documents as an '97 file so I can send them as attachments without imposing on others the pain I felt trying to deal with those sent to me things saved as '03 and '07 files, should the receiver not have the new software themselves.
Oh, and "no", there was no problem with the new software instantly and automatically converting the old Word '97 files into Word '07 files. A few reviewers mentioned troubles there, but I encountered no such problem.

Overall, it's not a bad product, considering it's from Microsoft. I consider it an improvement over MS Office 2003. This is mainly because I find the new interface superior to the old. The really annoying menus that do not fully appear from Office 2003 are gone, as are the scattered features that are not always where you would expect them to be. They are happily replaced by a more sizable but not too imposing toolbar that I find significantly easier to use. While more could be done to make it easier to use, the learning curve is not much at all for me, though I'm an advanced computer user.
However, it is like its predecessor when it comes to bugs. I've been experimenting with Open Office (a free office suite that is comparable to MS Office) and was amazed that Writer (Open Office's equivalent to MS Word) opened Word 2003 documents better than Word 2007! Word 2007 really screwed up my tables. Not only did it fail to align them properly and cause text to wrap that wasn't wrapped in Word 2003, it refused to save my corrections! Calc (Open Ofice's equivalent to MS Excel) did not fare as well for me, however, in that it slightly misaligned my spreadsheets and doesn't support colored tabs, though the latter issue is of no important consequence.
Is it worth $120? No, of course not, especially when you can get Open Office for free. But Open Office does not have every feature of MS Office (though it seems to have most, maybe all important ones, though I'm still exploring it), so if you want to stick with what you're comfortable with, it's not too terrible.
Product design damaged existing software making it unusable Miscrsoft dais tough sh t April 12, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Installation of MS Office 2007 deleted the spell check function of my existing Microsoft Outlook Express. THe spell check function only is in FRENCH. No longer can I run spell check on my outgoing e-mails. Microsoft said tough. Even though it is their software, their programming removed the english language spellcheck. They must have developed the programs in ???. Google this problem and also Microsoft web pages I am not alone with this fault. MICROSOFT IS IRRESPONSIBLE.
Leave good enough alone!! April 12, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Always wanting new and better humans are victimized by their folly only to get something that does the same thing in just a slightly different form. . Bill Gates and all other manufacturers know this and play it against our common reason. We fall prey to the weakness therein and then suffer consequences of only unknown proportions. Money changes hands, credit national debt increases and we all have something to replace that which already works or we can even get for free (open office) to accomplish the same goal. After all content is really what writing is about. Most great books and papers had even been written by hand!! BUT WAIT !! I'm getting this dizzy feeling: Must - go - buy - new - something - to - feel - briefly - better - and - empowered - can't - stop - clicking... (it must be those rfid chips in the new Captain Crusto's cereal I just ate).
Illegal copy of a Microsoft product April 12, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
This seller has sold a home-made copy of a Microsoft product, there are no registration numbers. A total ripoff to many unsuspecting customers. This was falsely advertised as brand new product. Buyer beware!!
