3 out of 5 stars Windows Vista Premium   July 19, 2007

This was an upgrade to my computer. I love the new features of this operating system, however it does not like my older devices. I could no longer use my scanner or printer. They are great old friends and HP is not going to support Vista for them because they are over 7 years old.
After finding this out I wanted to find the button to revert to my old operating system so I could continue scanning the family photos of my recently deceased parents. Unlike my upgrade from Win98 to WinXP there was no easy button. I would have to reinstall Windows XP and all my hardware's original drivers. My software was bundled on the computer so I had no disks. Too much trouble for me, so I had to buy a new printer and most of them are not ready for Windows Vista so you are getting only the bare min. functions. I've been waiting several months now and still no scanner at an affordable price that has all the features of my Dinosaur.
So my suggestion would be to make sure your hardware is compatable before you purchase because chance are the manufacturer will not provide upgraded software and although they might be there for a price most of what I just looked at the discount stores do not support Windows Vista.

1 out of 5 stars A slow, busy, obtrusive operating system   July 12, 2007

Operating systems should operate efficiently and modestly in the background.

Vista wants to make itself the star of the show. With its endless pop-up warnings and status messages, running Vista is like trying to eat in a restaurant where every five minutes the waiter scrapes crumbs off your table and asks you if everything is fine.

Vista is slower than XP, it requires more memory and processor speed, and it doesn't run older programs like Acrobat 6. Does this product have any reason to exist other than to improve Microsoft's profit margin?

I am uninstalling Vista from my laptop this weekend and replacing it with XP.

1 out of 5 stars Don't do it !   July 10, 2007

I bought Vista, don't do it. Not only are there compatability issues but other problems as well. Example: I tried to add a very simple audio video playback program. This is a program I have used for many years and I know 100% is Vista compatable. Vista popped up a window from microsoft denying access to add the player and the funny thing that sounded a bit suspicious to me, the window added that I can buy a program from windows to do the job. Can you imagine that! They are basically telling me what I can or can not do with MY computor and I should also spend my money with them only.(How I should sped MY MONEY). Do they really think the consumer is that stupid. It's big joke. No wonder why Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. I'm going to Mac once XP is retired. Software return policies are very limited so once you open it you better like it. I though it was new and better, well it ain't. The Vita operating system is also a very large program using a lot of memory. I also find it to be SLOW. I'm sending my new PC back and i'm looking for an XP compatable system. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MICROSOFT WAS THINKING OF WHEN THEY MADE THIS ONE.

1 out of 5 stars I should have read the reviews first   July 10, 2007

I can't add much to these reviews, except to tell you that you need to read them and consider yourself warned. Well, I saw Vista Home Premium on a new computer and thought it was cool. So, I did the Instant upgrade and downloaded my copy... it jacked my computer (which had been running fine with XP installed) all up. Nothing works, even most of my Microsoft products... I don't know what to do. I'm totally dissatisfied. It's hosed.

1 out of 5 stars Pay To Become Microsoft's beta-Testers? NO THANKS!   July 9, 2007

When WinXP came out I refused to abandon my reliable Win98SE until SP2 was released and WinXP finally became an operating system (from the experimental eye-candy it first was). Experts advise us to do the same with WinVISTA - yet I do not think this is ever gonna happen...

WinVISTA is far WORSE than the initial release of WinXP: NUMEROUS and MAJOR compatibility problems with most third-party Software, Games (well, all games except...HALO2), GFX-Cards, Scanners & Printers, Cameras & USB-Peripherals. Not to mention Microsoft Software!

Even MICROSOFT Software (such as STREETS & TRIPS 2007, ENCARTA 2007, PICTURE-IT or MONEY 2007) refuses to work with WinVISTA! If they did not care to support their own Software, why should anyone else! And all this trouble just for the cool Aero effect (which, by the way, may be NOT supported on your 2007 PC!) and DirectX10 (for which, you do know, there is not one affordable GFX-card compatible with?)?
I don't think so!

Windows is an OPERATING SYSTEM! Why is it pretending to be able to DO EVERYTHING? It canNOT! Sure, it is nice to be able to listen to music, burn CDs, browse the Internet. But that is why there are so many Specialized Software available! And, what is even worse, WinVISTA will not let exactly these Software titles function as intended!

Now, this is the UPGRADE edition - which means it is to be installed not on a freshly formated disk but over a pre-existing Windows edition. Read reviews in ANY forum: this is the WORST possible scenario in aspect of software compatibility and hardware drivers.

I had WinVISTA on my Laptop for about a week. I could not format quick enough! There is NOTHING WRONG with my WinXP-SP2. WHY CHANGE THEM?
