Works Great, Looks Great and Best of All Feels Great! July 5, 2007 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
I don't know what all the fuzz is about regarding Windows Vista, of course you need to upgrade your computer, every version of Windows requires upgrades, but this version of Windows is Top of the Line, it looks and feels a lot like tiger, but don't let pretty sights fool you, i've been using Vista since 3 months ago and it hasn't crashed even once, with XP or previous versions the count will be above 30 at least, i know there are some compatibility issues with some programs but this keeps vista from having the same problems with previous windows versions, microsoft know's what they're doing!
I really needed to upgrade July 5, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really liked the product and the new interface however I did not upgrade my drivers on the printer and I'm having a lot of problems trying to figure out how to reinstall it. I strongly recommend that if you cannot use your fingers such as me to type the speech recognition is fabulous I really love the improvements that they have made I would give it ten stars if you are a person who is in college and has to write a lot of papers I strongly recommend that you check it out.
Nice features July 4, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was really pleased with my Windows XP Home Edition. However, Windows Vista, besides all the eye-candy design, has some really useful tools that can secure and control better your PC, for example UAC, since two people administrate this PC, I created one account to be the only one Admin, and then the rest not admin, I set and easy short password (will be enough because this is not public pc, just 5 users) because I know the UAC window will popup a lot, but I don't care, I'm just getting used to it.
Parental Control for my 13 years old sister, not that I am spying on anyone, I warned her that her that I will be monitoring her account.
Back Up center is just what I needed since I handle a lot of information and I don't like to erase my works once I move onto the next trimester, I tested it and works great, I particionated my HD and set it automatically to locate all the back up over there, it just works.
Search, and you gotta get used to, I don't navigate into the start menu anymore, and hey!, who wants to navigate on the Windows Vista start menu with that new design? just sucks.
The Control Panel design is not that easy to use, at least for me, as in Windows XP, but again, search is there to help you out, I find faster using it than navigating thru it vast GUI.
WHY 4 STARS? Few issues I am having since I installed Vista (btw, it was a nice and smooth installation, I ran Upgrade advisor and everything was A-OK so, didn't have any issue thru installation process) is that Windows Update comes with this error code 80072EE2 when trying to download my sound card driver AND the help files does not download online content because suddenly loose Internet connection, but all the other updates installed correctly.
Also, the hybrid sleep mode doesn't work with (ironically) the Microsft Optical Mouse 2.0 as it will kick back FROM the sleep mode immediately, I had to plug and old PS2 mouse to make it work, besides, energy management here is harder to use than on Windows XP, so my final advise goes like this:
If you are running Windows XP and you are doing great, don't upgrade and/or install Windows Vista, unless you really need the useful features it has, wait for SP1, this boy still need some bugs to fix.
Vista is not progress. July 2, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Makes my brand new expensive computer crawl like a turtle. I don't understand why Microsoft thinks we need a huge operating system that uses 90% of our computers resources? Why? In my opinion an OS should be light and operate quietly in the backround. It's supposed to be just a tool for productivity!
Microsoft has gotten way too big for it's britches. I think they have forgotten the basic philosophy of a good operating system. Progress isn't measured by time it's measured by ingenuity, and Vista has nothing to offer. Also I'm highly suspicious of all the positve reviews. Don't believe them, Vista is terrible.
Imagine....there's no VISTA, no problems too (sorry, John) June 30, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I would LIKE to imaging an operating system without problems but alas, I must wait until the NEXT Microsoft offering to attain that blessed state. VISTA was not given the huge sendoff that marked other Operating Systems and for good reason. Little changed in appearance and operation (a few bells and whistles) and the problems are legendary - from crashes to slow processing to almost every quirky problem known to man or beast.
As bad as these are, "support" is worse whether it be Gateway, MSFT or your friendly provider. I had problems upon installation; the misnamed "Tech expert" demanded payment up front (my PC is 5 months old) & after a few seconds insisted I had a "corrupted hard drive" OR "bad OS disk". My teenage son said, "Dad, load the drivers" which worked. OF course that was not the end - pretty soon a popup every few seconds tells me Explorer has stopped working. The "expert" (an apparenly self-defined term) had the nerve to tell me it was something "new" (check Google) and then, you guessed it, bad hardware. My son & his buddies solved it rather quickly, restoring from Safe Mode.
Now it's bombing on Deep Sleep, that infuriating device flaunted by MSFT as their soljution to "Going Green" (allegedly, $69/yr is saved). As one can guess, there are more problems associated with this "feature" than a sex maniac in a girl's locker room. It is not so much the product as the lack of knowledge from our overseas friends who take our calls. Some don't even try to hide the fact that they're simply reading down a list..."Nummer 3, haf you reecent instaw new device?" No, I haf not. LOL
