I love Lightroom June 1, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am falling in love with Lightroom. I am a semi-pro photographer and have been using Bridge and Photoshop to process my RAW files and Lightroom is doing the whole process easier and better than CS2 bridge. It has forced me to start cataloging my images, which I desperately needed. One of the great things is that I can revisit my old work and import those old Jpeg files. I will say that it takes a bit of learning to get how it wants to handle the images. But, Adobe has some really great video tutorials which made it really easy to use. Finally the image editing features do a great job and I only have to use Photoshop for special touch up needs. I recommend it highly.
Gotta love it. May 29, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know this may have been just another way for Adobe to make more money, as they had many of these features in Photoshop that they have now migrated to Lightroom. But, honestly, Adobe makes great programs, and Lightroom is one of those "gotta have it" products. They're not always as intuitive as they could be, but then again, Adobe makes professional tools that are arguably the best products on the market for media editing, creation, & development.
I was in on the beta version of Lightroom, and once I tried it, there was no doubt I'd buy it when it released. It was the piece I need most in my toolset: a way to easily catalog my photos as well as do some developing without impacting the original picture. That's Lightroom in a nutshell.
The only downside may be the price. Some may say $200 is a little steep, but the time it saves me importing and managing my photos more than makes up for cost.
I'm totally hooked.

Not Ready For Prime Time. May 28, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I tested the beta of this program and it had/has great potential, but the production version 1.0 is buggier than the beta. I run an AMD x2 3800 processor with win xp operating system. I installed the tryout version of 1.0 and am not able to import my raw files off my cf card without the program coming to a complete stop and crashing. I have to actually reboot xp in order to fully shut the program down.
This is a well known issue with primarily mac users on the adobe forums. I have yet to see adobe respond to this problem by implementing a patch/upgrade to such a serious issue. To those that state their is a workaround to this bug -- copy files to the hard drive then into Lightroom - this still does not work with my large raw files and Lightroom still crashes. This is also not acceptable as it is counter intuitive to a large part of the program being produced for those needing ease to import from their cameras and cards.
The program has great potential, but I am not buying into this because adobe has a bad habit of charging expensive prices for upgrades. I will assume they will ignore the known bug and charge for the fix in version 2.0. I will wait to see if they get the program working fully with my raw files before I shell out any bucks. I like adobe's softeare programs, but their business model is beginning to wreak like ms'.
Interface and usability pros and cons May 26, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As an amateur photographer, I was looking for something powerful at low cost. Lightroom definitely fit the requirement. However, I have little experience working with any other professional photography software so I do not have much else to compare it with.
The interface it totally different than any other Adobe product. But what is wrong with that? The Library module is breathtakingly fast and I don't fear looking at hundreds of pictures at one time anymore. The Develop module is extremely precise but sometimes hard to navigate. I haven't used the Slideshow module much but what I have seen of it, I must say it does more than show pictures, it presents them. As for the Print and Web modules, I have yet to explore them. Yes, everything is fast, but you still have to have patience from time to time. Keywording is so easy both to assign and categorize; child, parent, grandparent (etc.) is a great idea.
Lightroom defeats Photoshop when it comes to picture processing because I am not trying to create or design anything. It is great for processing, organizing, adjusting, and touching up photos, but you are handicap if you don't have any true editing software. I was quite disappointed with the dubbed down Clone/Heal tool. In CS2 you can use the clone tool for anything; here it is very much restricted and only good for taking out (most) dust bunnies. I was hoping Lightroom was a little more powerful when it came to editing. Cropping and straightening is very interesting. You might say it is backwards. I am used to working in Bridge, so this difference is something I will have to get used to. Truthfully, I don't like it even though it technically makes more sense.
Another reason I did not make it a 5 star was because it is not that easy to remember what can be done in what module, view, window, etc. It is almost on the verge of being too cluttered. Also I can't understand why they say you can change the interface background color; white, gray, and black are the only options. I would be pleased if they had real colors. But that is only trivial.
Overall, Lightroom is excellent software and definitely well-priced. Despite a few interface clashes, I can't say anything against it.
