4 out of 5 stars Advanced features, good product; not so intuitive. Requires study of manual.   October 15, 2007

I bought Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition because I have the Sony HD UX7 video camera and couldn't find any decent editing software that would work with Sony's proprietary AVCHD format.

I also wanted advanced editing software that would allow me plenty of options for effects and adding and editing sound.

Platinum delivers, however, as someone who has only used Pinnacle in the past and only on a limited basis, I have to say that it does require a good amount of study to learn how to use its many features - even with the interactive Show Me How tutorials.

I ordered the product and then downloaded the tutorial to start using it. The Show Me How tutorials are good introductory information, but doesn't give you all the detailed, step-by-step information you need to complete basic editing tasks.

I was able to complete a draft editing project, add some music, some basic transitions and some basic title slides, though am currently at a loss on how to fine-tune the titles to my liking.

I also was able to successfully burn my project to a DVD and have it play. I must say that the DVD Architect software included to burn to DVDs is highly unintuitive. It was very disappointing that something as simple as burning a DVD should require me to read detailed instructions to complete. I'm specifically talking about adding and editing DVD menus, etc. So far haven't been able to figure this out.

It's obvious that I will have to spend a lot of time with the instruction manual to get what I need to out of this, but once I do, I think it will be very feature-rich.

If you're not interested in advanced features and desire to get some projects out soon after installing the software, you might think about getting the other versions of Vegas software.

1 out of 5 stars No manual, no help, no way   September 24, 2007

This cannot be used by normal human beings without considerable prior experience and training. There is undoubtably incredible power in this suite but you will not find it explained in the manuals or the online help files.I found no books available on 8.0 and the 7.0 book I found is also vague and describes a clearly different product. Having reread all 60 4x5 inch pages of my **** manual for Vegas and DVD Architect I am unable to create a dvd with menu from a digital HiDef camera videos.
There are flshes of brillance, the interface is very slick but if your prior knowledge is limited to capturing video from tape and Ulead 3.0 stay far away from this unless you have a private tutor.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect to create movies   September 14, 2007

I downloaded the trial version and printed the manual before I purchased this. I went through the manual while creating a movie and realized that it was pretty simple so I purchased it. Just make sure you have a DVD burner and the blank DVDs. I was able to put musice in the background, put writing in (ex. holiday - year) and I was able to put rolling credits at the end. Try the trial version first to see if you like it.

5 out of 5 stars I like this video editor, but you can download a free trial first   September 2, 2007

This video editor is able to read .VOB file from DVD's created from VCR tapes, making it great for editing the old family videos. The display is quite customizable and easy to spread over two monitors. There is a small learning curve, but the "Show Me How" help a lot. The only things that detract from this is (1) the lack of a comprehensive noise reduction facility (Sony has this as a pricey plug-in, but then, none of the other video editors in this price range has this feature), and (2) the DVD creation software is not integrated in with the editor (although it is included in the package). But don't buy this software just on our say-so, download the 30 day free trial from the Sony web site and make sure it works for you before you buy.
