Subscription renewal rip-off December 25, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have been using Norton Internet Security since 2002. A couple of times I only renewed the subscription as opposed to dealing with installing new software (never know which year it will be easy vs difficult). I currently have 2007 (XP) which has been adequate but the live update subscription is ending this week. After reading the 2008 reviews, I planned to just renew the subscription, but like another reviewer said, Symantec wants me to pay $49.99 twice for both my desktop and laptop. So $100 as opposed to spending $50 for the 2008 version that allows 3 "users." Since the software specifically allowed me to install on both, to say this is greedy is an understatement. Another reason why my next PC will be an Apple. In the meantime, I guess I need to buy another 2007 version for $50 and reinstall, just to get another year. The wasted time means no savings but its the principal.
Excellent protection December 25, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Excellent product and easy to install. I have several computers and all is protected with this product. Keep up the good work.
Awfull: kills performance, inscrutable menus December 21, 2007 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
One of the worst products I've ever had.
(1) It killed performance on my XP machine (500mb ram) even after I had seemingly turned everything except off except the virus checking. Doing anything on the PC was painfully slow after installation, and booting up in the first place was interminable.
(2) The user interface is terrible and totally unintuitive, making it very difficult to figure out how to change settings. I'm a professional programmer with lots of experience and I can't tell you how much time I wasted trying to figure out how to configure this thing.
(3) Adding insult to injury, you can't even uninstall it using the Control Panel's Add/Remove programs, instead you have to download the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of it.
I recommend that you trial any security software before you buy, all of them offer trials
Buy only if your computer was purchased the same year as the Norton version December 19, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I agree with the other reviews that this version is a resource hog. I have a Toshiba Satellite purchased in 2003 and I had no problems with Norton 2003 even though others complained that IT was a resource hog. I suspect what is going on here, much with Operating Systems and programs in general is that computers have gotten so much faster, programmers no longer bother to write "tight" code. Having said that, I see no real downside in actual use, the computer runs everything pretty much as fast as it did. It just takes about five minutes to boot up instead of one. It appears to be a very robust program and runs more "behind the scenes" than 2003 with less pop ups requiring a response. It also has some features such as a password vault that may be of interest to some, though personally, I just wanted a firewall and was too lazy too uninstall the prior Norton and switch to another product. Overall an adequate product, but don't try to put it on your older computer. Also, Zone Alarm got better reviews in Consumersearch.com and may be a better value.
Don't trust any comment until you try it December 19, 2007 4 out of 13 found this review helpful
Norton software has no "uninstall" attached, you need to go google search for finding its removal software, there have a ton of softwares out there with rebate free except paying the tax and stamp. I tried one and swear never touch any Norton product.
