Great product February 20, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I'm not qualified to write a feature-by-feature review of Fusion, but I've been using it since it first came out (and Parallels before that, until version 2.5) so I have some VM experience on the Mac.
In short, Fusion does everything I could every want. I use XP with Fusion on almost a daily basis and it's never let me down. It's fast, runs every app I have ever thrown at it, utilizes both cores, plays nice with OS X with respect to shared devices (like printers, DVD drives, USB peripherals, etc.), doesn't hog resources, and offers a very seamless workflow in Unity mode.
It's also nice that VMs created with Fusion run in WMware Player on Windows boxes, though that's a feature that I benefit from more at work than home.
If it's this good now, I can't wait for 2.0. Fusion has truly mitigated all of the reasons I had for not buying a Mac, and all without cumbersome rebooting (though I keep a Boot Camp partition for the occasional game, as native 3D is still superior to the support in Fusion and Parallels).
Running Windows the Fun way :) February 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
VMWare Fusion has been a great addition to my new MacBookPro. I have 4 GB of RAM and it runs smooth as silk. I only wish I had a larger hard drive so I could run more virtual machines.
The software runs great, it does suck up some RAM when running and when not connected to a power source, the fans run like crazy to keep the MacBook Pro cool.
I don't play games, so I can't speak about how they work on a virtual machine. But since Quicken for Mac stinks (based on my use of 3 of the previous Quicken versions), I have no need for Windows except for Quicken. I already owned a copy of XP and got Fusion for a great price along with a rebate made it a no brainer.
It is so weird to run Windows XP on a Mac, but it just works. I've installed other Windows only programs, such as a radio station DJ software along with a microphone and mixing board and everything hummed along perfectly and recording sounds just as good.
I choose this over Parallels simply based on research I had done on the Web and the price was right.
As of July 2008, VMWare is honoring upgrades from version 1 to version 2, which is awesome since version 2 adds more stability and timed "backups" called snapshots.
I do not regret this purchase and neither will you!
The biggest piece of advice I have is make sure you allocate enough space on your partition on your Mac HD for the virtual machine as it is pretty challenging (but doable) to reallocate space. This is a great piece of software.
Very impress with VMware February 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very impress with the product. I have solaris 10 , ubuntu and Vista installed on my MacBook pro running with 2gb memory and leopard. I usually run 2 VM sessions at the same time and it runs with no problems.
Turning vision to reality February 13, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It feels great to have Microsoft reduced to a minor role and used only when needed. VMWARE works exactly as advertised. Buying Parallels was a waste of money and time for me. The VMWARE installation was incredibly smooth and it was up and running surprisingly fast. I don't give many 5 stars ratings, but I thinks it's right for this product. I have zero complaints about it. And, I got it all here at Amazon. "A great merchant", as Jeff Macke would say.
I thank the reviewers here who steered me towards this product. One of the favorite things I've read on the web is Eric Raymond saying no problem should ever be solved more than once.
Spotty support and only 30 days tech support February 10, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was very excited to get this product so I could get rid of my Windows machine completely and only use my Mac. It installed easily and for about a week ran flawlessly.
Then I started having problems. Somehow my Windows registry data became corrupted and would not run in the Fusion program at all, only in the native boot camp mode. Even there, of course the registry was damaged as well, but it would at least run (for 30 days before it would no longer work, per Microsoft).
The problem I had, and why I have given the product three starts is due to poor support. First of all, VMWare only gives 30 days of free support (other than chatboards) and is pay-per-incident after that (I think about $30). Thirty days is simply not long enough (I don't know how this compares to Parallels). I also had problems with the support staff. Lakshmi, the person assigned to help me was prompt in his emails for a while and gave me several suggestions that did not solve my problem. We tried solving the problem twice, but when that didn't work he simply no longer responded to my emails. To date, I have not heard back from him or anyone else from the company for that matter. I ended up completely re-installing my software, both mac and windows because nothing else worked. Obviously, that took many hours.
Fusion is now working again, but it has only been a few days, and every time I use it I hold my breath. Oh, another problem this caused was that I had to keep contacting Microsoft to re-authenticate Windows or it would expire in x number of days. I hope that my experience was unique and that others don't have these problems.
The whole experience does make me appreciate Mac OS X all that much more!
