Best of Both Worlds February 3, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I just moved from PC to Mac, and I needed the security blanket of being able to run WinXP for necessary work programs. One is an intensive CAD program (MapScenes Pro), and the others are Photoshop CS3 and Pinnacle Studio 11. My investment in these other programs was considerable, so leaving windows behind was not possible.
I compared both Parallels and Fusion at MacWorld '08 in San Francisco. I picked Fusion after using both and figuring out that Fusion is better with graphics intensive programs. Other folks have backed up this observation.
VMFusion handles all my programs easily, and it is very stable in the Mac, which is a huge plus. The CAD program I use would frequently cause my PC to freeze, and I have not experienced that yet on the Mac. I did have one hiccup for no real reason, so I easily closed the VMFusion box, reopened, and in just a few seconds I was back in business. No restart of the Mac necessary.
I easily transfer files from the XP to the Mac for emailing or whatever. But here's the best part: The XP (or whatever) is 100% operational in the Mac. You can browse, download, email, anything. Any viruses that might come into the XP virtual machine are contained there, they seemingly cannot harm the Mac. But you can run your PC anti-virus and firewall in the virtual machine anyway if you want to.
It's true: Windows will run 100% fully functional in your Mac. I am 100% happy with this product (and my shiny new Mac). This is certainly a "product of the year."
Allows me to be more productive. February 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The VMs work great, and the product has been stable (so far).
I use a combination of VMWware Workstation and ESX servers at work, so I chose Fusion in the hopes that I can re-use my existing VM's. I was pleased that my VM images opened without modification, and that they ran. I've also noticed that my VMs run faster than at work, so that was a nice surprise.
My Mac is the 20" alum. imac at 2.4ghz, with 4gb of RAM, which is 1.5 more than my work machine, but outclassed by the VMWare ESX servers.
Pros - Works like the other VMWare products Easy to install Good performance Wakeup from suspend is very fast (compared to my XP Pro workstation with 2.5gb of ram).
Great integration between the host and vm, I can cut/paste text and even files. I think this works better on Fusion than VMWare Workstation
Unity Mode is sweet.
Cons -
On my 4gb system with Safari and Activity monitor active, my free ram goes down to around 40-50MB, with Wired at 712MB, Inactie is at 2.61GB. I guess the Inactive just means the system can recover the ram if needed. This doesn't appear to be an issue.
Only 1 Snapshot, To be honest I didn't really use the Snapshot feature that much on the Windows XP machine, (more than 1 anyway).
Can't clone a machine, Again that's not a feature I used a lot. A Clone is basically a baseline image, this will save you space. This might be available inside the package...I found the app that allows you to shrink and grow a disk...so maybe there is an app to clone.
Doesn't run on my Powerbook G4 :)
Overall:
Great Product, I think the VMWare Product team hit the spot with the right feature set and performance level.
A must for PC migration February 2, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this to handle some of my software that won't run on my Mac Mini. It is very easy to install and use. Their support is very fast to respond to questions. The nice thing about Fusion is you can run the Apple OS and the Window OS at the same time without rebooting.
It would be five stars except for one thing January 27, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
VMware fusion does everything you would expect it to if you were already familiar with VMware Workstation. The only particularly annoying problem I've found is that I always have to enter my system password when loading the boot camp partition in a fusion window. This product is an absolute must if you already have VMware images built.
Too Perfect... January 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Facts: -Performance exceeds expectations: I am able to run SolidWorks (3d modeling program) on my MBP faster than the PC workstations in my lab. -Amazing suspend capabilities: you can pause WHATEVER you're doing for days, then return to exactly what you were doing -Presets add to ease of installation: installing Windows? Easy, insert CD, click 3 buttons and you're done.
All and all, I give this four (4) stars. This is because the program is too perfect. It's so perfect, that I have become convinced it will make my computer spontaneously combust at any given moment.
