4 out of 5 stars actually pretty good   March 21, 2008
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This upgrade is actually pretty good. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because I was "forced" to upgrade from 2005 by the payroll service. In fact, I was so upset by this abusive requirement that I went through the trouble of downloading a copy of MS Accounting Pro 2008 and stayed up late one night testing it.

To my disappointment, MS Acct Pro is still not up to the challenge. QB has still a great advantage from all these years (I've been using QB since 2001). Since I am writing about MS Acct, it uses MySQL technology, which at first I thought was good. However, the file size for my company was a whopping 160mb, when my QB company file is only 28mb.

Going back to the payroll service, I used to think $[...]/yr or so for my enhanced package was a lot, but it is in fact reasonable compared to the other choices, such as Wells Fargo, and certainly MS Acct.

QB 2008 has some improvements which at first I thought were lard, but some are actually good, such as payroll schedules, and the billable control. However version 2005 was just as functional.

Prior to upgrading I got a new dream PC (AMD Quad processor, 3gb 800mhz ram, etc) which may explain why installation was trouble-free, so I don't know about all those complaints some have. I have used it for a week and I have not gotten any pop-up selling me crap. The one silly and annoying bug I found was the inability to play the video tutorials, but there is a documented work-around, so it's OK now.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwile Upgrade   March 19, 2008

If you are a user or TurboTax Business and Quickbooks, then you will find this a worthwhile upgrade. Additionally, I have been using this version on Vista Home Premium 64 Bit and it is working fine.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING! - QuickBooks is Adware   March 18, 2008

Unless you like reading pop up ads, don't buy this software. QuickBooks Pro forces you to suffer through a constant barrage of pop up ads for addtional services, products and upgrades. I just spoke to customer service and they told me there is no way to disable this feature. I can understand being forced to read ads for free software, but I am stunned that I am forced to read ads in a piece of software that I paid for. The next time I am forced to upgrade (QuickBooks stops supporting older versions of their software after just a few years) I'll just switch to one of their competitors.

2 out of 5 stars Upgrade WARNING   March 15, 2008

I was forced to upgrade by Intiut's payroll service from QB2005 to QB2008. If you are upgrading from QB2005 or before you MUST read the following: This is a MAJOR upgrade with a change in your company file format. Before you upgrade you must backup your company file to floppy, second hard drives, CD, DVD, anywhere and everywhere you can. Please reread the previous sentence. After the install finishes it asks you if you will let it move your company file to a new QB directory. YOU MUST WRITE DOWN THE LOCATION OF THIS NEW DIRECTORY ON A PIECE OF PAPER because in the install step coming up QB2008 forgets where it put it. Preferably you will have QB2008 find and load this moved file rather than loading one of your multiple backups because your backup has a different file suffix. FWIW: My Windows Internet Explorer (XP Home-SP2) oddly found the moved file but didn't tell me the files' correct directory path. Really. I finally located the moved company file in a shared documents area which is not where Internet Explorer said it was. In loading this file for the first time QB2008 will convert the file to the new QB2008 format.

When I went to register my QB2008 the online registration failed because it claimed my IE wouldn't allow cookies which isn't true. Hmmm. What is Intuit up to with this? To register I had to talk to someone in India who was hard to hear and understand.

It seems that every few years QuickBooks changes their company file format and almost forces you to upgrade. BTW: The install program adds some advertising icons to your desktop. No problem. Just right click them and delete them.

The program menu in QB2008 looks completely different than QB2005. Looks like I'll be spending some time re-learning.

2 out of 5 stars Complicated   March 13, 2008

I'm software and hardware proficient, but this software is COMPLICATED if you don't have some accounting or bookeeping background. My partner and I both were lost every time we opened it up. We finally gave up.
