3 out of 5 stars not very impressive   March 21, 2008

I can't decide whether or not Windows OneCare has done me more good than harm, so I'm going to make a list:

Good:
- I've had trouble setting up an automatic backup to my external hard drive in the past. Windows OneCare made it easy.
- I hate manually defragmenting my computer. Windows OneCare puts defragmentation on an automatic schedule. It can do other basic housekeeping chores, too.

Bad:
- Installing Windows OneCare crashed my computer. Not just crashed. It took me about 20 minutes to escape from the Blue Screen of Death that popped up on restart, after the crash.
- Windows OneCare found some viruses already on my computer...but won't delete them. If the whole point of this program is to keep my computer clean, shouldn't it be able to erase viruses?

It's worth noting that Windows OneCare is a _subscription service_. When you buy the CD you get one year of service; each subsequent year costs money - $30 I believe. This fact is not advertised anywhere on the box, and when you begin the installation process it directs you to register when really it sending you to sign up for a payment plan. This all felt pretty deceptive to me, which I don't like.

In short: I don't hate Windows OneCare, but there's got to be something better out there.

3 out of 5 stars Worked perfectly for our needs   March 21, 2008
One of our children inherited a computer and the virus system was outdated. Along came OneCare to the rescue with its spyware detector, firewall and a regular checkup.

It took a very long time to load because there was so much junk on the computer, much of it needing to be deleted. But once the program was installed, the computer suddenly ran more quickly and plenty of viruses were gone, gone, gone! As noted, it maintains itself. So that is a major plus.

Having noted that, will this be the system YOU want? Maybe - or maybe not.
The ability to customize this and the automatic maintenance and upgrades give us some peace of mind. They work even when our offspring is asleep, protecting the system pretty well.

We don't like the annual fee, however. It isn't cheap! Also, some spam got by this program. Finally, it could not remove all "potentially harmful" programs. We had to do that manually and it was hit or miss for awhile, locking up the computer. In short, installation was not that simple.

In all fairness, however, we didn't put it on the newest computer. So take that for what it is worth and consider your options.

In summary, I would not call this the best all-purpose safeguard out there but it provides a reasonable degree of protection for those who aren't doing more than emailing or light use of the internet.

3 out of 5 stars Well   March 21, 2008
It took forever to get this up and running. I had to create a special login, which required personal information, in order to just finish loading the program. This is a subscription product, somewhere in the $50 a year area. The "seamless" claim stated in the marketing materials is just a way that since it is made by Microsoft, it plays well with Microsoft. Basically it makes the red security "unsafe" mark go away in the security panel. I have no idea what it actually does, but when the software is loaded, it says that everything is now "safe". There seems to be a psychological component to this product, in the way it is implemented in the interface. So if the red X turns to a green check, its all okay. And you have to pay $5o a year to keep it that way.

1 out of 5 stars I can't rate this item because I haven't been able to use it yet.   March 21, 2008

All I can say is that if you do choose to purchase this product, be sure not to buy it from Nothingbutsoftware. First of all they contacted me 4-5 days later after my original message. They were unable to solve my issue and had wasted 4 hours of my life transferring me back and forth from rep to rep. Please be advised, you should read their return policy as any other retailer's because in the event that you receive damage goods they will basically tell you, "too bad". By the way, if your product does not have a product key, Microsoft will tell you it is the responsibility of the retailer to keep record of the product keys along with their product and buyer. I'll post a message when I actually receive an intact version of Windows Live One Care

4 out of 5 stars Great security software   March 21, 2008

This program is a great comprehensive software for security and performance tune-up software. It replaces Norton on our systems. Since it is a Microsoft product, it works well with Vista. I recommend it.
