An excellent foundation for learning Spanish September 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased Rosetta Stone in the airport after seeing it many times. I speak French and have always wanted to speak, read and write Spanish as I think it's important living in the USA. We are most certainly becoming a bilingual country and I want to be able to communicate with everyone. That said, I am very happy with my purchase. It's really quite effective and has me thinking in Spanish and I'm only going into Level 2. Of course I am supplementing my learning with a dictionary, verb book and a couple of phrase books... one using lots of slang and naughty words and expressions. The more you put into it the more you will get out. I also have been watching Spanish TV and listening to Spanish radio and talking with friends who are native speakers and it's all very helpful. This is an expensive course and I'd only recommend it if you're actually serious in learning Spanish. Buena suerte!
High Quality, Expensive, Effective -- Good Value September 23, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I own several of the Rosetta products including this one. Foreign language acquisition does not come naturally to me and this immersion-based product is nearly perfect for me. In essence, this software helps you to learn a new language by avoiding translation and imitating the way children NATURALLY acquire grammar. Is it effective.... Yes, very much. However, it is quite expensive compared to say Pimsleur audio which is NEARLY as effective when used along with a good grammar book and inexpensive reader. If you have the money to spend, I think it's a good value. However, I don't think these products are worth it if you buy them one-by-one. If you are serious enough to buy the package of three, then I don't think you will be disappointed. You will really learn, review and begin to think in the language in no time in a relatively painless manner. While Pimsleur audio is effective, it can be more boring. I like the Rosetta Stone products that come with the audio companion for use with my iPod, especially right before I go to sleep where retention is highest. If you can afford it, the audio companions are useful, but NOT necessary to get the full experience. You can get the same content simply by repeating individual lessons as review.
Rosetta Stone September 21, 2008 The product gives all that Rosetta Stone claims to be. A great learning tool to increase your language skills.
Not Worth the Money: Rosetta v. Pimsleur September 19, 2008 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am trying to learn Spanish for my work as a community college counselor. I am using Rosetta, Pimsleur, classes and one-on-one tutoring. Rosetta Stone is helpful, but it is not all that the company claims it to be. It could be so much better. The words the program provides are often obscure, especially in comparison to Pimsleur. Also, Rosetta Stone does not repeat words as much as they need to for maximum memorization. I learned much more quickly using Pimsleur. I don't believe Rosetta's claim that seeing pictures helps with memory. In fact, I think auditory CDs are just as good, especially if you have a good imagination (because you are imagining the scenes in your head). And, auditory CDs can be used in the car! Rosetta is good when used in combination with other methods. Don't believe the claims that you will learn conversational Spanish just with Rosetta Stone.
Extremely high quality product September 15, 2008 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is, without question, my longest term review. I have been using this software on and off for about two months. I really wanted to hold my review until I had finished the software. I wanted to be able to tell potential buyers how far this package, alone, had gotten me toward becoming an actual speaker of Spanish.
However, it has become clear to me i will never finish reviewing this software. i don't have a truly compelling reason to learn spanish and without that i find that my motivation has simply failed 2/3rds of the way into set 1 of 3. I suppose one could wonder if my boredom with the software is a sign of a weakness in its design. it is a question I've asked myself many times. Yes, the lessons are repetitive but they probably NEED to be.
So far the key strength of the program has been to teach me new spanish words. The program itself never translates anything into English so you wind up "thinking" in Spanish. This is what they mean by immersion. However, as i have gone through chapter after chapter i have found my ability to form sentences not improving at all. This has caused me to become discouraged. I really think that the people at Rosetta Stone should include some early confidence builders that drill making the user get whole sentences correct as much as they drill individual words and parts of words. I know that is jumping ahead but it would have helped to hold my interest.
If I do get back to it I will, of course, revise my review. I subtracted a star because the voice recognition portion of the program is not very good. Even when I bumped up the level on the voice recognition it still accepted as correct words I had intentionally pronounced incorrectly. It is, however, clear to me that this is a rigorous and serious software package that truly attempts to TEACH you to read AND write Spanish.
