1 out of 5 stars horrible software   October 6, 2005

This Nero software came with my sony 800 DVD writer. I could not get this software to do anything for me. It would not recognize even the DVD drive although it is fully comfortable with my Sony Laptop. All I was getting was error messages. I went on the internet and downloaded a free trial of Intervideo software and it worked flawlessly. I was very happy after 2 days of frustruations I had trying to get the NERO software to work.

5 out of 5 stars C/D and DVD Creator   September 30, 2005

Exellent program, replacing Easy C/D Creator which had to be replaced as it interfered with other programs. Nreo has excellent technical support.

2 out of 5 stars if you hate instructions, buy this product!   September 19, 2005

Ahead provides the most minimal support for this product I have ever seen. An example: I want to burn a music mix onto a CD, then I want to break it down into tracks. NO instructions about how to do that in the manuals. When I Google the problem and find directions myself, I am successful (I think). Then Nero tells me the first track "may only" have a 2-3 second pause. Does that mean the pause is mandated, or that this is a maximum for the pause? Who knows? What I do know is that the plain English of the term is ambiguous. I try a few possibilities without fixing the problem. Nero tells me I am having this problem because of "the CD that I have." What feature of the CD is the problem? Or does Nero really mean it is the CD burner I have? How should I know?

The package is broken down into many different programs and often you can spend quite a bit of time just trying to figure out which one applies to your problem. Is laying down track numbers an "edit" or a "burn" function, primarily? Depending on the answer it will be either in the mix/edit or the burn program. So just spend an hour or so looking through the various manuals searching for your problem, page by page. I say "page by page" because that's what you'll do: The Nero indexes to the documentation are simply pathetic and astonishingly incomplete.

Most amazingly, at one point in one of the manuals Nero comes right out and says, somewhat accusingly toward the reader, that the manuals do not have all the information that you will need and, indeed, not all the topics are even discussed in the manuals. So much for one reviewer's thought that a separate book as a buy is not needed because the manuals are all you need. What a joke.

On Tuesday or Wednesday of last week I sent part of my problem to Nero customer support. Monday--yes, the next Monday--I received a response claiming to fix the difficulty. Above I mentioned the problem of not having guidance on what program to use. Here is an example. The solution I got over Google involves using Nero Express to burn. Tech support sends me into the mixing program. So, apparently, the problem is solveable in either--except neither manual even mentions the issue. Baloney!

So that's it. This may be a great program (or it may not be), but so far I have had a frustrating experience. The frustration is largely due to Nero's failure to provide written support that is complete for the product.

If you like mysteries and puzzles, buy this product, you will get all sorts of fascinating challenges of interpretation, and at the end of the day you will be able to congratulate yourself on your cleverness. People who value their time and want to get things done and expect clear directions will not be so happy.

People tell me REASON is a better product.

LATER: In defense of Nero, now having used it a bit, if you just mostly want to burn CDs, then you'll find it a snap to use.

1 out of 5 stars Nero 6 is junk   September 18, 2005

I'm not an idiot, but I can't make nero 6 ultimate edition do anything. The photo viewer tells me it has errors and won't run...can't make it copy my photo files. Arrrrghhhh.

4 out of 5 stars Good product, slow customer service   August 17, 2005

I had some problems with Nero when I first got it that ended up being a problem with the driver for my DVD writer. Took over a week to get the customer service to determine this though.

Once I got it working Nero has worked wonderful. My wife loves it and has figured out how to make DVDs on her own. We love it.
