Easy Wizard and works with DivX movies too! June 25, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
After reading the reviews where folks were saying that they found it easy to make home movies, I figured I'd test making a DVD from DivX movies.
DivX is a high-quality video compression format that makes a DVD movie about 700Mb, instead of the 4.7GB in size. This is currently the most popular format for converted Tivo recorded TV shows & movies to the computer.
I took 3 episodes of a TV show (approx 800Mb each in size) and added them to the create DVD wizard.
The only problem I had, was the program wanted to convert the videos from its original 2.8 Gigabytes to over 5 Gigabytes in size. Even with referring to the manual and the Help, I couldn't find how to compress the files to fit on a single DVD-R disc.
I tried single 700Mb movies and the system wanted to make it over 5GB. I took five 350Mb TV episodes and it wanted to convert it to 12GB.
I finally stumbled upon the compression listed in one of the settings as aspect ratio. Aspect ratio normally refers to if the displayed screen is regular TV format or widescreen movie format etc. The aspect ratio settings also had the choice of these, but it had some additional settings that I played with and my 3 original files were now only 4Gb.
Also, when using multiple video files, the program wanted to automatically merge them into one large file. I didn't want this as I wouldn't know where the episode breaks were. I used the Video editing tools to add chapter breaks across the single merged file.
I burned my DVD. The conversion and burning took a full hour for a 4Gb DVD burn.
The end product was a "title page" with background music and the title of my project. Once I clicked PLAY it took me to a sub-title page, which listed the 3 episodes I added to the project. I could select them in any order and play them as if they were chapters on a regular DVD.
The only other problem the program seemed to have cut the breaks 15 seconds earlier than I had set them too. So each chapter started with 15 seconds from the end of the previous episode. No biggie.
OVERALL: The combining videos, editing videos and burning of a DVD was fairly simple and all the tools are in this single box. I didn't need to read the manual to finish my first project, the wizards were very intuitive. Very good product!!
Lot of power but not as intuitive to use as it could be June 24, 2008 the software has a lot of cool features, and if you are into video editing no doubt you will love this program. It is very feature rich. However I am not a big fan of the user interface. The wizards are the a bit clumsy and the regular interface, I don't find that intuitive. Having said that, I have been quite happy with the product after I overcame the steep learning curve.
Great For First Time User June 24, 2008 I decided to try this software as part of my learning experience for running my website. I'm always looking for great ways to get decent video content on the site, or produce slideshows. I have some experience (Macromedia) with .swf but found it to be outdated and wanted to upgrade. I was happy with this product in many ways. The manuel is user-friendly and easy to get through. I loved the Movie Wizard for slide shows and found the audio (sound enhancing) to be premium quality. The layering and effects are excellent. I haven't yet done any DVD burning, but plan on making a slideshow/video presentation for my grandmother's 100th birthday. I have already tried some different things on the program and think it will be relatively easy, even for an amateur like myself. I am also interested in the chapter making for instructional DVDs. I run this software on Vista and have had no problems. I did have to turn my spyware off while installing however...I'm not sure why, but once I did that, it uploaded fine.
Finally an easy way to extract video from DVDs June 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this item as I purchased last year a Toshiba Satellite that included a DVD Movie factory by Ulead that works pretty well, very cool templates and other functionalities that have allowed me to create very good-looking DVDs. There were some opportunity areas (for example, if you add a music file to a menu you have no way to edit the audio file or select a portion of it, I have to use Cool Edit to format the audio file to what I need) So I thought the retail version would have more functionalities than the one I already had and decided to get this one.
First of all I had no problems installing it, while I am stuck with the awful Windows Vista, installation ran smoothly and with no incidents. The software comes with a manual that I honestly have not used, the features are very easy to use and so far I have not needed to consult the user guide.
There are three applications and only two of them I have used, the one I haven't tried I really do not have a use for it which is to extract video files from a camera or similar device. I own a Sony DHC and I use the basic windows functionality to extract the files from it.
The first one I'd like to talk about is the video editing software included. While it may not have as many functionalities as the retail box makes you believe, it has some interesting features. First of all, it allows you to select an intro theme to your video which then you can add music to, same as the DVD factory I previously owned, there is no way to edit the audio you use in here, so say the intro is about 10 seconds and you add an mp3 file of over a minute, the song will play over the menu AND your video. There is a neat feature that allows you to trim your video and select the bits and pieces you want to keep or remove. What I liked the most is that this program offers the possibility of extracting video from a DVD and then edit the video on your own. I tried several of my home made DVDs and some of them worked and some others didn't, which is a shame but I believe it might be due to the way in which they were recorded, the ones that didn't work were recorded with a DVD recorder I got to copy my VHS into DVDs. I also tried some music DVD's I own playing with the idea of creating a music video compilation, well, it worked. What the program does is that it extracts the selected video track from the DVD into an mpeg file, from there you can edit it or keep a backup copy of it if you like.
After you are done editing and preparing your videos you can then create your movie. So far I have only created DVDs and VCDs and it has worked great, there are several templates included, some of them look very professional and some others look like they were made in power point, fortunately, the menus can be personalized and you can add/remove things to your taste. In the case of DVD menus there is a feature that allows you to edit the background music, something I really appreciated as I won't have to rely on an external program to do so.
Overall, a great product with some neat functionalities, I have lots of videos I have taken with my Sony camera as well as others I have downloaded and I am happy I got this product. The only time it has failed is when I attempted to open a divx formatted file, it crashed. I have not really had the time to investigate if this is normal or if there is some kind of codec I need to download. I will update the review if I find anything on that.
Superb Program & Fast Shipping June 23, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The price of Video Studio 11.5 was excellent. I received the order just two days after I placed my order. The program is easy to use and is filled with a number of special editing features. I am able to download from a DV Camcorder, a HDD camcorder, as well from a DVD-R. I've owned several other video editing programs and this one is by far is the best.
