Don't risk it October 18, 2007 I am a Comcast customer like some others here and downloaded this product as an upgrade to the McAfee I already had through them. BIG Mistake. I just hung up after being on the phone with their tech support for 1/2 hour trying to uninstall it. My computer had been badly messed up for several days before I came here and saw that I was not the only one suffering these problems. I realized that it was the McAfee program after reading the other reviews here. Trying to get assistance from them was quite painful too. What a mess!
Cannot recommend this package October 17, 2007 I purchased this for remote installation at my brother-in-law's location in another city. After remotely connecting, I removed the previous installation of McAfee, completely purging all McAfee remnants from the XP Home OS. I then installed this suite of programs.
McAfee apparently did not install correctly...there were apparently portions of the suite that did install. To make a long story short, McAfee (probably the firewall) blocked all access to those things it though were "dangerous" ... this unfortunately included all access to the web through DSL or dialup, and also included many of the XP utilities including System Restore. So it couldn't even be restored to a previous good state. Since there was no Internet access possible, I couldn't access the system to do any repairs. My brother-in-law is not a computer-aware person and there was no way to talk him through using msconfig to take out McAfee services. So, it cost him a small bundle to have a tech come to his apartment and repair the install. Plus he's out the $40 for the McAfee package.
I have since remotely installed Avast AV and enabled his Windows firewall so he's protected. The McAfee will make a nice coaster, I suppose.
Hope this helps someone...this suite does work on some systems but it's generally so big and so system-invasive that it has, IMHO, a high probability of failure on installing. I put it in the same bin as Norton's package...they appear to both be bloatware which causes system problems and slow downs except on pretty clean OS installs.
Mcafee Internet Security Suite October 3, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was the first Item that I ever purchased from Amazon that I was not happy with.It completely shut down my computer for 24 hours. It was not compatible with my computer which I thought was strange since the previous mcafee internet suites worked fine. This was not Amazons fault it was Mcafee's.I was completely satisfied when Amazon took the item back and credited my account.
Don't buy this product ! October 1, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I downloaded the McAfee Security Suite from Comcast (also available from AOL) and installed it on my daughters XP Pro laptop. Soon as it was installed the system slowed to a crawl and would go blue screen if I tried to do anything.
I finally got into the remove/add software utility and told it to remove the program, which it tried to accomplish but bombed half way through. Then I was stuck, because nothing worked as it should after that. Any program that oepned a box like System Restore, or User Properties, or Help, would open with a blank screen. I tried to get online with McAfee, but first I had to hack my wireless system back together so I could get on the internet, then when I got there, McAfee wanted me to run their Virtual Tech first which as it happens wouldn't run due to their stupid software.
After working on the problem from Friday to Sunday, I finally found a small program called MCPR.exe on (someones website) that removed all of the McAfree broken hooks and restored everthing back to normal, well most everything. I still had to go into the Services area and tweak a few things back that it had altered.
Be afraid, be very afraid of this product!
Stay far far away from Mcafee September 8, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought Mcafee Internet Security a short while ago, I waited about 2 months to activate it and install it on my computer as I was being deployed and wouldn't be using the computer at all for the next couple of months. Once I activated the product and installed it, it bogged down my system almost to an unusable state. I tried to exit the program, that way I could only open it when I was connected to the internet. There is no way to shutdown the program. It was constantly updating and scanning and making things much worse. When I looked on their website to find a way exit the program and or stop the constant scanning, there was no way to talk to an agent with out calling a pay-per-minute phone number. I called customer service to have my money refunded, first they told me that my account was only a free trial so they cant refund me anything when I didn't pay anything. When I provided a receipt that I had, in fact, paid the $70 they said they couldn't refund me, I had to take it to the retailer I bought it from. When I contacted them, they said they don't accept refunds on opened products. I contacted Mcafee, and several hours later still no refund. Stay away from this company, they are only have your money and have no service or support. AVG will be getting my money from now on.
