Not much of a techie, but I like the options August 28, 2008 I'm as paranoid as the next person about computer safety...okay maybe a little less, but my husband is little more.
We've been long time Norton users and decided 'what the heck' a bit more security wouldn't hurt.
The reality with such programs is when they're working you really don't notice them, as they keep the bad stuff out. The only time I ever really see my security is when there's some crazy tracking cookie detected, a scan is running or there are updates.
That being said, I like McAfee's Backup and Restore option, not that I've had to use it yet (thankfully) but as I'm the one most likely to initiate the Blue Screen of Death, this is some added peace of mind.
I'm still discovering how the filtering of offensive internet content works as there have been times when I type in, let's say, bird and get back a host of nude images on the google image page.
As I said, I'm not the most active user of my security software, but I like the peace of mind it offers.
User-Friendly Protection for your PC August 24, 2008 The McAfee Internet Security Suite has some great features beyond just virus scanning. It has anti-phishing and anti-spyware protection. It also has firewall and system backup/restore software included. One thing I've found useful is when someone sends you a link via instant messaging programs, you can scan the link as well. I'm always skeptical to click on links and this is a good feature. You can also prevent security scans screens from taking over your computer when you are working in full screen. They will run in the background. It does slow down your computer a little bit, but has not been unbearable.
You can install on up to three computers in your home - for a very good price. We only installed on one PC as we don't use the other one and the third is a Mac. If you need help from the McAfee folks, you will need to "chat" with them online (free), unless you want to pay for telephone support. This would be a downside for many... I would rate it 3 stars as-is and 4 stars if it would have included free telephone support.
does it all August 22, 2008 I added this to my granddaughter's laptop and my other grandchildren's desktop to make sure they stay protected while surfing and searching and I am very pleased with the protection McAfee offers. I have McAfee on my desktop and laptop and would never go back to Norton.
Definitely works as advertised August 22, 2008 Having used previous version of McAfee security products, I had no hesitation to using the Internet Security Suite 2008 product. I installed it on three PC -- two running Windows XP and one running Windows Vista. In all cases, the install went without issue. Perhaps having previous familiarity with McAfee helped in this regard, but I found the process to be straight forward. Once installed, the software runs as advertised. I use all of the features (firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware, internet security. I use auto-update feature to ensure that the software is current. I absolutely recommend this product. I will definitely be back myself for the new version when my one-year subscription runs out.
Does not offer users enough control August 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Once again, I am frustrated by virus protection software. My main problem with virus software in general is that it often ends up acting like ad-ware. One of the reasons I purchase anti-virus software is to make sure I avoid installing software that produces pop up ads. However, the McAfee software is constantly popping up various warnings and ads. In fact, when my subscription had expired, I was continually bombarded with "special offer" pop ads aimed at getting me to renew. Also, warnings continually pop up asking me to update my software. No matter what I tried, I could not get these pop ups to go away.
I like being in full control over all the software on my computer and I feel as though most virus software programs limit how much control I have over them.
Yes, McAfee does seem to do a good job in catching viruses and malware while not slowing down my system. It was easy to installed and the initial scan was performed quickly.
Overall, I just wish McAfee gave users more control over the way in which the product functions.
