4 out of 5 stars best solution   December 29, 2007

I used to have Parallels- when I upgraded to 10.5 I switched to VMFusionware. It is so much better than Parallels- it just works.
It's still kind of a ram pig and works best if Mail & Safari or Firefox are closed first.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good product   December 29, 2007

Not too often you can say that software is "very good". This software delivers a very stable virtual machine. It has not crashed the first time since installation 10 days ago. I installed windows xp professional edition, so I can not comment on vista. I wanted to be able to use my current printers (one of them not supported by vista despite being only 2 years old)
Copy/paste between the system work very well. I do not play games, I only use the windows machine for applications I can not run on the imac (very fewlike Money, palm desktop, epocrates) or the ones I do not want to spend money again since I own them for PC (office)
Few annoyances: for the function keys to work in the windows machine I have to press th "fn" key in my imac keyboard first. Documentation and manual is less than optimal. The online forums and FAQ are quite comprehensive though.
I am happy with this software. I recommend it.

I works for me much better than Parallels when using Ubuntu Linux as a guest OS.

3 out of 5 stars Are you an Microsoft Windows User using an Apple computer?   December 28, 2007

If you are using MS Windows like your main system in an excellent Apple Intel machine, this program is not for us. In addition, if you are thinking do not move to Mac OS system for now, buying this software is a lost of time and money:

Advantages: Excellent program for Mac users using MS Windows for a while, as well using it, one alone computer user, in one unique Mac machine. You can size your hard disk to your convenience (you part your hard disk, for example at 32 GB, and then, the Virtual Machine consume only the quantity of partition that it is needing, awful!), and resizing the RAM memory by yourself. It is very useful for Mac users.

Disadvantages:
Using one or several users in Mac OX, but having several users in the MS Windows Virtual Machine at the same time, the VMWare behavior is erratic, unexpected, and terribly insecure with your private information. It is very crazy.

In addition, you can never access to MS Windows with one click (Only at VMWare program- warning) against of boot camp way that with one only touch of the Option button. (I do not know why the Apple software developers have not found and discovered the old, very old smart way that the MS Windows developers have developed decades ago leaving to you choose the Operation System at the PC starting, when you have 2 or more versions of MS Windows in a unique machine)

You need share the memory RAM and you always need connect/disconnect/ and again mountain physical resources when you use these between Mac OX and your Virtual Machine, such as DVD/CD Driver, external HD, etc.

You can not configure your network within MS Windows Virtual Machine because the physical connection with your modem is throughout the Mac OX Network connection, totally incompatible between both OS systems.

And more, much more disadvantages if you are not Mac User expert. Think you carefully before to buy it. Believe me, Boot Camp is the best one of these solutions than still, like VMWare, is far, very far from being developed completely.

5 out of 5 stars Fusion the best choice!   December 28, 2007

I am a professional programmer, and have used both Parallels and VMWare Fusion. Fusion is clearly the better product. It is much more stable, performs much better, and simply works.

I use Fusion on a Quad Mac Pro with 4 GB RAM and a bunch of hard disks. I currently have Vista Ultimate on Boot Camp with a corresponding VMWare machine. Both work perfectly. (I did have XP Pro, but recently upgraded to Vista [did in place upgrade, worked perfectly, no issues], and find that Fusion supports Vista very well - there is the double activation issue, but that just take a simple phone call to Microsoft - just be sure to say you are using Vista only on one machine, the one you bought the software for).

I also have a pure XP VM and a Ubuntu workstation/server VM, and it works like a charm. Perfect platform for web development - run a complete server on the Ubuntu VM, and live on the Mac, with Windows available when needed.

Fusion has not let me down, unlike Parallels. Fusion seems much more professionally done, while Parallels seems a bit like a big hack.

If you like to play with different systems, and haven't tried Ubuntu Linux, give it a try. Doesn't take much work (you can download a working version ready to go from VMWare!), and is a bit fun to play with. If you're a developer, then the Mac Pro / VMWare Fusion platform might the the best development platform ever built!
