1 out of 5 stars Firewall Problem   March 25, 2008
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

Got this at the beginning of March. Loaded on my Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP sp2. Installed ok, but when Firewall is activated, I am unable to connect to the internet. Disable Firewall and I can connect. Not good as Firewall is one of the main reasons for getting this software.
Contacted support...followed their instructions. 3 emails later (8th March was last I heard from them) still not working, writing this review on March 24th!. Perhaps they are on holiday?

I like this product a lot, but do have an issue with the company. They are not very willing to help with problems and conflicts. I had Spybot Search & Destroy on my computer and it was conflicting so I removed it, and couldn't get rid of all the files and techs with BitDefender don't seem to want to help with that issue. Although as far as security programs goes I feel BitDefender is what it lives up to.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible product   February 25, 2008

Bought this program based on great reviews in magazines and on the web, but after a week of trying to get it to work, I dropped it and went back to McAfee. The program shuts off its features, like the firewall, without warning and you have to reboot to get them back. If your computer doesn't have a fixed IP address, the firewall rules you create clear themselves at every reboot, and you have to reenter them. The program has a huge white list of hundreds of applications I don't use and has no way of editing the list to reduce it or add your own applications (believe it or not, the latest versions of IE, Outlook, and Firefox aren't on the white list). The program is a resource hog (maybe because of the huge white list)--it has a small footprint when there is no computer activity, but it really slows down anything that requires internet access. Firefox, Outlook, IE take more than twice as long to start.

I purchased BitDefender after using McAfee for several years without problem because of online reviews and price. This was a mistake. I would not recommend BitDefender because of the following issues:

1) BitDefender frequently request a reboot when it updates itself over the Internet which is a nuisance. Rarely a requirement with McAfee.

2) Performance was impacted vs. that experienced with McAfee.

3) It was impossible to re-install MS Flight Simulator X with BitDefender installed. Kept getting access denied errors and the installation would fail. Could not disable BitDefender in a way that the access denied would go away. Finally uninstalled BitDefender. After that MS Flight Simulator would install. Never have had a problem like this with McAfee.

4. Every time I booted, BitDefender was slow to initialize and I would always get the error from Windows that says the PC is not protected by virus software. A nuisance.

5. At times, portions of BitDefender seem to just disable themselves until a reboot.

6. There is no real product warranty if you look at the included warranty. All that is warranted is the CD media. There is no warranty that it will do as advertised so you are just out of luck if you have problems.

In a nutshell, go with a more mainstream product.

1 out of 5 stars No technical support   February 24, 2008

I have used various BitDefender antivirus programs for several years and have found them to work well. Unfortunately, I bought a two-year subscription for Internet Security 2008 and have had several problems. I could deal with some of them if the company provided technical support. Unfortunately, they rarely respond to email and phone lines are always busy. They gave me an extension on my subscription as compensation for the terrible support, but that's not much help when I have been waiting since Thanksgiving for help and still have not received it. I finally removed the program and I am trying out some others. Quite a waste with about 1 1/2 years left on my subscription. I will never buy one of their producIts again.
