#1. Still September 7, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The hardest, toughest, most unforgiving, and most rewarding racing title made. After about a month of spins, crashes and curses, this game clicked. It was like a light going on; suddenly the car handling and my responses came together and it opened out into the deeply challenging sim that it is. The mod community (gplea) mean that this "old" title is dynamite looking now and is continually updated. If you have a wheel and a good system this is just about unbeatable.
The best racing simulation, but just not for Windows XP!! August 29, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been a fan of auto racing and racing simulations for many years, and GPL is probably the best ever in terms of realism. Problem is I just bought a new PC with Win XP and find out that Sierra or Papyrus do not have an updated version available either for sale or download. It's a shame that such a brillantly designed program should fall into the scrap heap in favor of the typical arcade-style junk that seems to be the hot sellers. Maybe some brave soul will come to the rescue and bring this little piece of racing history back to life for those of us who were pretty much forced to upgrade our PCs.
Good Physics, outdated interface and graphics August 18, 2003 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
Some classics are best forgotten when they require one to spend more time updating them than playing them. GPL, while having a great physics engine for 1960's era F1, has graphics that are difficult to get used to, even when improved by various mods. The lack of a fullscreen image is a real pain. I never knew about this when I purchased it, although to some this may not be a terrible loss. My main problem was with the horribly organized mod community. It took me hours to find good and reliable sites for this game, and even longer to understand what all the mods were for. A sound appreciation for F1 history is 'required' before purchasing this game, as there are too many car types, manufacturers, and drivers to keep track of. One could develop quite a headache from it all. It gets worse when dealing with the mod community. GPL has been modded to death IMO, and should be replaced by something newer. I played it a bit, but found the lack of some features and the graphics barrier was too much to deal with, so it has been shelved in favor of newer racing simulations like F1-Challenge. GPL should be bought for history/novelty purposes only
Wow! May 14, 2003 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I'm used to playing F1 2002 and the switch to this game has taken a lot of practice and time. The cars are NOT easy to drive -- no God mode here. The cars are fast, sound great, and respond with the twitch and jump of a real sports car. Brake too late? You're going to crash. Can't hold a perfectly straight line on the 5 mile straight? You're going to flip and your race will be over. The dynamics of this game are a real challenge, but it is worth it. Once you complete a lap (yes, a lap) at speed you'll think you've won the whole race. You'll need to download some patches, but the game is very solid. There are TONS of car and track downloads out there, including the old LeMans with the 7 mile straight and many newer tracks. Wonderful. Make sure you practice!
Graphics Are Still Great Despite its Age December 15, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
When I bought this game 1 month ago (November 2002), four years after the inital release date of 1998, I was extremely skeptical about how well this game would stack up. Many games from only 2 years ago now look awful and are unplayable due to poor graphics, so I couldn't imagine that a game produced in 1998 would look anything less that ugly. How wrong I was. The games producers have released patches that allow modern graphics cards to display the game nicely, and for every track and car in the game, somebody out in web-land has produced a high resolution graphical update. In short, the game might not be as hyper realistic looking as some games, but it is by no means ugly. In fact, at times, the game is downright beautiful to look at. Coupled with the amazing game play and a new force-feedback steering wheel, this game has provided me with one of the most engrossing PC gaming experiences I have ever had. For anybody who likes a challenge and has the patience to work on something that doesn't provide immediate results, then I highly recommend this game -- it is one of the great masterpieces of the PC gaming world.
