 License is deceptively restrictive October 28, 2008
Be cautious about purchasing this version of the product. The license specifically forbids you to use it in conjunction with any business. You can't buy this version and then use it at home to finish a report you were working on for your boss, nor can you use it to prepare a presentation or spreadsheet if you are going to use it to make money. I didn't realize all of this until I had already spent the money. If you then want to upgrade to the version that will allow all this, you don't get credit for having purchased this version.
Bottom line: don't buy it. By the standard version instead.

It is not clear from the information describing "Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007" that its license stipulates that it CANNOT BE USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES and that ALL its electronic documents appear with the words "Not for commercial use" at the top of the screen.
I chose "Office Home and Student" version of Word 2007 because it best suits my needs as an academic and a writer. It includes "ONE NOTE," which I will use as a researcher, and does not include all the expensive exotica supporting traditional business ventures, such as accounting spread sheets, that all the other versions do include, and that I don't need or want.
It is apparent that "Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007" is a product designed for use by children. All adults have fiscal/commercial interests they might choose to represent in an electronic document: as taxpayers, consumers, and citizens. And it is prejudicial to those interests when a document announces to every reader that it is "not for commercial purposes."

For the price ($113) I probably shouldn't complain, but when I purchased my laptop, I thought "Office" was part of the package. I didn't know I was only getting a "trial" version, and as "Office" has become a standard in the workplace, I really had no other choice but to purchase it. The main feature I like about "Office" is it's on-line translation tool and the ability to input Japanese characters; this really boosts my bilingual capabilities. rft
