3 out of 5 stars For those who like attachments, or a large # of emails stored   November 29, 2005
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

This software has many handy capabilities and is well designed and organized. It integrates many things that you may otherwise need 3 or more programs to have.

That said, the program sometimes lacks practicality. If you choose this program (and I have, even still) be ready to wait. If you manage a large number of emails, emails with large attachements, etc. this applies to you.

I use this software for my work email: I have 10+ folders and >1000 emails in my hotmail account. Some of these have large (>3mb) attachments.

The most prevalent problem is that the software locks up when it is busy...annoying for those who like to multitask. You might click on the wrong folder to look something up for an email you are writing, and end up waiting 20 minutes because the program locks up to download an email with an attachment. Your quick email becomes annoyingly slow. Plus you cannot always move on to your calander/tasks/notes/project center if it does lock up to do something else productive.

I give this software 3 stars because it seems to be the best out there (especially for hotmail users). However, learn patience before you buy this. Good program but maybe one day a version will emerge that is more efficient.

3 out of 5 stars OK   October 22, 2005

You should only get this if you really nead it ... unfortunately, you probably do. Although overall this is a fairly decent attempt by Microsoft to make something asthetically pleasing and Mac like, it is hampered by the usual Microsoft problems:

1. It keeps 'helping' you when you don't want it to. Although you can presumably turn most of these features off you probably wont have the time or inclination to find out how to. So you'll have the pleasure of being confronted by offers to create Powerpoint slides when you open up Word, have brackets turned into smilies as well as a host of other random edits and substitutions that are correct maybe 10% of the time.

2. It is bloated with features most of which still don't work correctly. I would say this is slightly worse than the Windows version. For instance, the bulleting and numbering seems to go wrong or randomly switch between styles more often and the styles and header numbering is even less stable.

In addition to these standard MS problems they've managed to make the whole thing run really very slowly. I'm using a G4 Powerbook and Word cannot even always keep up with my moderate touch typing speed (i.e. there is a noticable lag between typing and words appearing). If you are editing a document with lots of numbering then you will notice delays in the order of seconds when, for instance, deleting selections - even small ones.

Overall: a decent looking release hampered by the usual Microsoft problems and a general sluggishness.

1 out of 5 stars You Can't Teach a Tiger a New Word   October 7, 2005

The current version of Office2004 is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH TIGER!!! Microsoft Word will crash on you, and to a crippling degree. Do not buy this if you have a Mac, since you'll eventually upgrade to Tiger and Microsoft may or may not care enough to fix it. If you've got some sort of Microsoft addiction and intend to buy it anyway, you could always see if they've released a patch for it. Don't just take my word for it, check out the discussions all over the net by searching "word crash in tiger". There's always NeoOfficeJ...

I have not tried Entourage because I am fine with Mac's Mail program. Word, Powerpoint and Excel work just like on a Window's computer. I have not had any problems switching files between my Mac and a Window's computer (people ask me if that is a problem).

The only drawback to me is that the toolbars are a little more confusing in the Mac versions. They are all individual windows and I am so used to Microsoft Works toolbars being all up top.

5 out of 5 stars If you connect to Exchange, this is a must have upgrade!   January 26, 2005

As a Unix system administrator, Microsoft Office is the best reason why I use the Mac as my primary workstation OS. Aside from the usual hassles of getting Linux up and running on any machine (especially on a laptop!), there really isn't any good Office alternatives that can effectively allow you to collaborate easily with the rest of the MS-centrict world - especially with Exchange. Microsoft Office 2004 allows you do to so easily without sacrificing your need to use an Unix OS (except, of course, for a lot of cash).

Case in point: With Entourage, Exchange support has improved to the point that the setup is even easier than Microsoft Office for Windows - when you run it for the first time and you configured it for Exchange, it ask for three things:

1) Your username
2) Your password
3) The domain you log into.

That's it. It setups everything up. You don't need to configure the outgoing user, try to figure out which message store to use - it just works! Even Outlook 2003 for Windows does not do that. That and with much improved junk-mail filtering makes this an worthwhile upgrade (at least for me)

As for the rest of the package, I used Office v.X before the upgrade and from what I can tell, there is no big changes, aside from project center and some possible incremental updates (although now there is an autoupdate program that updates your current office install - but I think Office v.X has that as well). Overall, If you do need to exchange Office docs with your MS Windows work mates (and the Free alternatives doesn't cut it - which usually doesn't these days) and you need to connect to Exchange, get this upgrade.
