Excel alone makes it worthy of 5 stars December 20, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was wary of any Microsoft Office product on the Mac following the failure of Word 6 on the Mac in 1994. This one turned out to be pretty good, although it seems to be showing its age.
Excel is the program that impresses me the most. Apple has not released a standalone spreadsheet since it had its Claris subsidary years ago and Claris Resolve hit the scene (this was in 1991). Until they can fill that void, Excel is the standard by which all other spreadsheets are judged, as it has been for 20 years. An Excel for dummies book helps, as it shows more features than meets the eye. More powerful than any other spreadsheet before it, Excel also impresses with its 3-D charts. Office is worth it just for this.
Pages, Apple's word processing/layout hybrid, is clearly more elegant than Word. Word, however, includes some features that are different that those of Pages. When used together, great results can be produced. Either as a standalone also works relatively well.
Entourage (the Mac name for Outlook) can be used as an email client, but I prefer to use it as an address book. It manages that very well, and the book is easily sharable with the other programs--for example, envelopes can be easily printed in Word.
PowerPoint is the only application that disappoints me. Its templates look very dated when compared to Apple's Keynote. The interface is also less elegant than Keynote, plus the program is slow.
The interface of all of these programs is very similar to the Windows version, with the biggest change being the name of the email program. If you have the academic license this is worth it for Excel alone--and it doesn't hurt to have Entourage and Word floating around either.

I'm an undergraduate engineering student, which means I spend a lot of time 1) doing homework and 2) using my computer. During the times that those two activities coincide, I'm often writing a report or working with an Excel sheet. Before I picked up this version of Office, I had been using Office 2003 for over a year. Office 2003 crashed--a lot. Almost every time I'd use Word or Excel a crash would occur. As a result, I began to hit command-s after about every 25 keystrokes--obsessive, you might say. When I came back to school for the 2005-2006 year and upgraded to Office 2004, I had hopes that because the software was newer, it would somehow be more robust. In my opinion, it's really not.
Sure, the interface is a bit cleaner and updated, but even though I'm running the most current versions of this sofware, it still doesn't work very well--crashes occur all too often. It's not the power software I had hoped it would be.
As I've told my friends many times, I maintain that Microsoft produces crap for the Mac OS. You can disagree when you like, but I'll be switching to OpenOffice 2.0 when an OS X version is released.
If you can get this for "free" (i.e., it's covered by tuition or something), go for it. It *IS* better than Office 2003, but not by much.
not quite perfect October 31, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got the Office for Mac so as to allow me to transfer documents between machines. I would have to say that transferring data using a USB drive saves me a lot of time, although it is not entirely seamless. Some formats on Office Word 2003 are not quite the same on the Mac Office. Otherwise, Office for Mac allows me to continue using my Apple in a PC dominated workplace. It was a good investment.
MAC version of MS Works October 23, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Not a bad product. I do not really like the Entourage feature. There really is not a need for it. I have an email account or two already. I have a planner that I live by and you can't do anything with it except track stuff like that.
I am also not satisfied by the way there are not the regular office options in the word section--no resume template! i feel that is a must for a student product like this!! I had to create my own, which did end up coming out better than the one on Word for Windows, but still the function should be there!
I just think more should have been included. I also feel that this program does not work as well as the Windows verison. More should be done to make the similar!!
This verion for MAC is not that great... the only thing good was that I found it for a great price on Amazon!! Kudos to them!!

Works just as I had hoped. I had an 5.1 edition of Word, and there were no problems converting.
