Worst Software Package that I've ever bought. October 6, 2007 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I upgraded my office 2003 with the new Office 2007 just a couple of months ago. I've been a Microsoft fan for a long time but needless to say, I've never been as disappointed with any software upgrade as I was with this one. Everything takes at least 3 times as long, it takes forever to get used to, and simple commands such as "word count" take forever to find. I've been happy with Microsoft software updates up to this date, but I'm amazed that a company such as this would alienate its customer base this way!!..If you're thinking about buying this package...I strongly recommend you to find something else!!!
I Love It October 5, 2007 2 out of 17 found this review helpful
After a few hours of using this 2007 Office, all I can say is WOW, I Love It.
Stay 2003 or Open Office October 3, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I posted this on the single Word review but thought it to be important to put here as well. The user interface for Microsoft's Office 2007 is horrible. I had it installed at work thinking I had an upgrade. From the confusing and unintuitive user interface to formulas that don't work there is no way that I can recommend this for business professionals. Stay with 2003 or get Open Office unless you like pretty pictures.
Professional? Not very. September 27, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I upgraded my computer at work a couple of months ago in order to run the newest version of AutoCAD MEP and my new computer came with Office 2007. Considering the fact that AutoCAD is a much more complicated program than any of the Office programs, I assumed that I would have more trouble getting use to the new AutoCAD than Office. I was wrong. At least in AutoCAD, the interface is more or less rational. The new interface in Excel and Word is horrible. I've been using it for a couple of months and I still have a hard time remembering where some commands are located. The menus are gone, replaced by "The Ribbon", which is basically a set of tabs with command icons on them. Apparently my idea of the logical location for commands is not the same as whoever designed this GUI. Unless I missed it while activating the program, there wasn't any option to take a quick tour of the new layout so it took me about five minutes to figure out that I had to click on the big button to access the open and save commands and then another 10 minutes to figure out where the help function was. I don't understand why basic commands such as open, save, print, undo and help didn't merit room in the "Home" tab of the ribbon, while the Styles function takes up 9" of screen space. I have a 20" widescreen monitor running at 1680x1050 and the help button is literally 1/8" in diameter. If they were going to make it that small they should have made it red or flashy or something to make it stand out instead of blue against a blue background.
I suppose that I wouldn't hate the ribbon concept so much if you could actually customize it without being an xml programmer. It would have been nice if they had left in some option to revert back to the old menu layout. I really don't need a good deal of screen or menu space taken up with a dozens of huge icons. I feel sorry for people running at lower resolutions. You're going to lose a lot of working space.
Since I use AutoCAD, I'm use to having my file format being obsoleted every 3 years, so the fact that Microsoft changed their file format with this release isn't surprising. Other than the new interface, I haven't noticed any new or better features so I guess changing the file format is the only way they have to get people to upgrade.
About the only good thing I can say about this version is that the animated help agents are gone so I didn't have to waste time turning off the stupid dancing paperclip.
Seriously cool if you watch out for two things. September 26, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Note: Please be aware that the Accounting Express 2007 program included in the package is an "Ad ware" type of product... you'll be faced with rotating ads while you're in it (you can "Upgrade" to an ad free version of it for an extra $150-street price). Microsoft really blew it here. I hate ads. I'm sure you do, too. Also, finding help on some things will probably really frustrate you. There's no book, nada.. just a short sales piece/brochure. You WILL need to buy some books and video tutorials to fully take advantage of your investment in this. So, be prepared to budget for those. An aside, with Publisher in there, I'm quite stunned that there is not an option for at least printing out your own instructions manual, at your own printing expense. With what they give you in Help... trying to do so is unfortunately a paper waste extraordinaire.
But, overall, I must say, it's a relatively cool set of programs. Between this, and the Adobe Creative Suite 3 products, you can have really good reason to stay on your computer because you're eventually going to be getting some serious work done if this is your vein of work.
