Wish it was better February 8, 2008 I bought this for my wife who is taking business classes for an associates degree. Now, she needs Microsoft Publisher which I will have to buy. It would be nice if that was included in this bundle since it is called "Home and Student".

Good program, I received a better price for this than at other sites. And the free shipping was also a plus. Easy for my son to install. Thanks.

This is junk software and was even being toted by QVC as a great addition to their Dell 17" Todays Special Value "over 200.00 Office software". Everyone failed to mention is was not for commercial use and is around $50.00. It is a trial version at best and and not even that good. Stay away from it as long as you can. I not have a 1700.00 Dell with junk Vista and not Junk Office Home and Student NOT FOR COMMERCIAL USE. Can't trust anyone and that is sad.
only upgrade if you're unsatisfied with previous versions January 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i must say i love office 2007, but minor drawbacks come with it. only upgrade if you're not afraid to try something brand new because the new interface looks nothing like before. it's very easy to get confused with all the icons. microsofts' new ribbon technology is a tab system that actually makes commands more accessible than old school drop down menus. it takes some time to get used to, but with the added options, power users will love it.
i feel sorry for those that don't like it, because they've been buying older versions that were all pretty much the same thing and now that something different and new comes along, they reject and refuse to learn it.
office is now a great tool to use to make very appealing looking documents - great for personal and small business use. it's a lot of fun to use, so it might be distracting to employees of larger companies because they'll be playing with the various tools for fun.
there are numerous, attractive templates for every document imaginable. i've already found so many beautiful and useful calendars, planners, letters, presentations, resumes, budget sheets, etc. available - dozens more than older versions. you can browse and download every avaialabe templates for free at . some templates are usable by older office versions, while some are exclusive to 2007, so read the descriptions.
i felt like i had to fight previous versions of office because creating simple indents and tables would be such a pain. word 2007 in particular can do a couple things so much better than before. inserting tables is so easy! when inserting pictures, clipart and graphs there are dozens of visual improvements that would usually have to be done in a special graphics program like photoshop. for instance, when inserting a picture, you can adjust the image in a 3-dimensional space, adjust the brightness/contrast/color, add mirror/shadow effects and so much more.
IMPORTANT HINT: many users have become frustrated because they think office 2007 is completely incompatible with previous versions because by default the applications save to a file extension not recognizable by older versions of office . this is NOT true! you have to go to the top button (office button), select save as > word/excel/powerpoint etc. document. this way you can view and edit your work on any computer with previous versions installed. you can even save your documents as PDF files so that other users can view but NOT edit your work - very handy to keep other from taking credit for your hard work!
in conclusion, if you don't any real gripes with your current version of office, don't bother - stick to what works! if you don't think it's broke, don't spend money. on the other hand if you have the time/patience to learn and do more than just create plain-jane documents, invest and take advantage of the new tools and interface!
MUCH HARDER TO LEARN THAN OFFICE 2003 - VERY TIME CONSUMING! January 31, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
UPDATE: 3/21/08
Now that I have been using this software EVERYDAY, I have learned many shortcuts and tricks in it. And, I now give this software a 5 out of 5! I love the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR. On this toolbar, you can add the most often used items such as: NEW FILE, PRINT, MARGINS, FONT SIZE, etc. Now that I have just bought a new laptop, I also am using this software in it as well and now I am totally happy with this new MS OFFICE! Now, I have changed my review that I had last year as after working with this software, I now just love it! How time changes things!
THIS IS THE Jan 2008 REVIEW: RIBBON was really different, but not hard to learn. The main change is (if you do not change it) is when you save a file in the new OFFICE Word, for example, it saves the last name of the file to DOCX. The older OFFICE versions 97-2003 saved the last name of the file to DOC. So what happens if you do not do the simple steps that I will explain in this later, is that when you just SAVE a file in the new Word, the older WORD 97-2003 cannot read it. But great news, you can FIX this problem so that if you are like me, you go from the OLD OFFICE to the NEW OFFICE and then BACK TO THE OLD OFFICE AGAIN with files. So here is some helpful info to let you be able to work in the NEW OFFICE and then open up the file you saved in the NEW OFFICE to the OLD OFFICE: If you plan to read and write ANY OFFICE 2007 file and open it up to use later OFFICE 2003 (and even OFFICE 2002), this is what works wonderfully and allows you to use the OFFICE 2007 file in older OFFICE PROGRAMS from 1997 to 2003: While in OFFICE 2007, do this: go to the ROUND OFFICE button on the left, choose SAVE options, then choose SAVE AS OFFICE 97-OFFICE 2003. This allows you to save the file in the older OFFICE formats which each of the older OFFICE files end in the letters DOC for example the this file called VACATION-2006.DOC has this name because it was saved in the OLDER OFFICE(this is a older Word Document). (You want to do this step first as soon as you get the NEW OFFICE 2007 because if you do not do this, the program will save the last name file with the extenstion of DOCX and not DOC). The older Word 97-2003 can only read files that end in DOC, this is why you need to do this. Then later when you go to save a file in OFFICE 2007, go to the ROUND OFFICE BUTTON again. Choose SAVE AS. You then choose the SAVE AS OFFICE 97-2003. I have done this everytime I work in OFFICE 2007 and need to open up an OFFICE 2007 file in OFFICE 2002 or 2003. Even with some of the newer features found in OFFICE 2007 such as the PICTURE FORMAT with the more border features, I have not had a problem at all when I save the file this way and then open it up in either OFFICE 2002 or OFFICE 2003. When you use EXCEL 2007, this procedure is done the exact same way. At first, I did not like the new OFFICE 2007. However, I found that after you click each area of the RIBBON, you quickly learn where everything is and is becomes easier and easier to learn. You know what helped me the most in OFFICE 2007? Right clicking my mouse for an INSTANT MENU. Then about 95% of the time, this INSTANT MENU gives me the feature that I need the most and is the quickest to use. However, I sat down and clicked each area of the RIBBON for about 15 minutes and then I learned the program. And I am a long time MS OFFICE user of many years. And using the right mouse key for an INSTANT MENU works great in ANY Windows program from OFFICE to Internet Explorer. The reason that I just gave this program a 3 and not a 5 is that I feel that the filing system should have kept the older DOC and not added the DOCX. However, this can be overcome, I know as I did the above steps and have opened MANY OFFICE 2007 files in my OLD OFFICE 2002 (and that is wonderful)!
