A Good Upgrade from Office 2003 November 20, 2007 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Yes, I've used Office 98, Office 2000, Office XP, and for the last year or two - Office 2003. I initially thought I'd never get Office 2007 until my computer crashed and I noticed I lost my 2003 CD Key when I re-installed Windows XP.
Anyway, Office 2007 Home and Student edition arrived in the mail about two hours ago. Since installing it (very quick compared to 2003 installation) I've been playing with it and testing all of the features.
My response? I love it! The new menu options took a few minutes of getting used to but now I can use them very easily. Yes, I read all of the negative reviews about people complaining about the ribbon design but ... I see no problem with it - it actually makes things easier to get to (the things I need to do anyway).
One awesome feature I like (being a college student) is the auto indentation feature (1. asdfsadf (newline + tab) a. asdfsadf). In 2003 to do a 2. asdfasdf you would have to hit backspace (erasing the a.). In 2007 you can just hit Enter at a. and it moves you to 2.. This is a big thing for me because most of my school documents use that format.
One thing I noticed was the smaller document sizes. .Docx is a heck of a lot smaller than .doc. A 25kb .doc file is about 17KB in .docx format. Even though I have over 1TB of free space - that is a plus in my mind.
The startup speed of 2007 is a whole lot faster than Open Office (what I was using after my computer crashed till 2007 came). Even on a 6 year old Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz it is incredibly fast. I notice NO lag that other reviewers claim. Maybe it is because I have 2GB of ram?
As a college student I've pretty much just used Word 2007 so I cannot comment on Powerpoint 2007, Excel 2007, or OneNote 2007.
Horrible New Version November 19, 2007 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
Microsoft has a nasty habit of arbitrarily moving and adjusting elements of its popular applications with each upgrade; however, I have never seen anything as bad as this before. Anyone who spends any semi-serious time using Office is going to have a really bad time trying to figure out how to use this new version. I have to be honest - I only tried working with Word and didn't even get to PowerPoint or Excel. I had to stop before doing every little action and figure out how to do it. EVERY. SINGLE. ACTION. And some functions are just not there (or I couldn't find them). I'm pretty good with figuring out how to use software on my own, but after a couple of hours with Word 2007 I just gave up and reinstalled Word 2003 on my new PC. I cannot tell you how frustrating it was to try to use this program. If major corporations try to upgrade to this new version, their office activities are going to come to a dead, screeching halt. I suspect this 2007 version of Word will go the same way as Word 2002 -- quickly replaced with a newer (like the older I hope) version. Otherwise, I'm looking to find some new software.
WORD 2007 NOT EASY TO USE! November 18, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We have not found the Word 2007 version of this product easy to use.
Six months ago, we purchased and installed this product on our computers ,removing the earlier version of the Microsoft office suite, with the firm belief that we now have a superior upgrade.
Unfortunately, after two weeks of earnestly trying to learn and use this version we gave up, and removed it and reinstalled the older, friendlier version.
Perhaps we will keep it on one computer, taking some time during the course of the year learning how to use this format and product design.
So far, we have found the format to be quite different (ie. from the older version), cumbersome, and somewhat difficult to use.
The Word 2007 version of this product is not user-friendly!

User friendly? My A** November 11, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Wow, I've never felt the need to write a review before, but Microsoft 2007 is horrible. I bought it for my laptop because I need it for school, but I really regret it. I wish I had bought 2003 instead; it's so much easier to use than 2007. This edition I use mainly for Word, but I've also used Powerpoint. At first I thought it was going to take a little time to get used to, but then it would be an upgrade from the old version. How wrong I was. I've had it installed for over 2 months and it's gotten no better. One thing I've noticed is that it keeps trying to change things without me telling to, such as when I'm trying to format my document, create an outline, tab correctly to type an MLA bibliography, everything - it's trying to help by assuming I meant to do something (and thus doing it for me) when I REALLY don't want to! It's horrible! And forget the help button too - it doesn't exist in this version. All I'm trying to do is get my work done for school, but it takes me FOREVER just trying to get it the way it has to be formatted becase that's not how Word 2007 wants it to look. This is a pain in my a**, and my friends who have this and are used to 2003 all agree with me - why is it so difficult? It really shouldn't be. So I urge you all - look at 2003 if you have the option, it's much easier to use even if it doesn't have the spiffy new appearance of 2007.
