3 out of 5 stars Read this if your family will be using this at home   October 21, 2003

This software is no fun for families who share the same computer. My husband has the administrative account and the kids and I can not play any of the pc games labeled windows 2000 compatible unless we are signed in under his account or unless he gives our accounts FULL administrative privileges. Of course the kids can not have FULL administrative privileges so they pretty much never get to play any pc games. Their new ones don't work and their old windows 98 compatible games can't be used either. My kids and I think this OS stinks for that reason.

IF you don't have the family dilemma then Windows 2000 Professional is great; MUCH better than Windows 98.

3 out of 5 stars not compatible with anything   September 27, 2003

I would not recommend this OS despite using it at work for almost a year without a BSOD. It is unsuitable for home computing, and is a disaster to upgrade from Win 98SE. My attempt to do this resulted in a long list of incompatible software, hardware and drivers. The upgrade got 15 minutes in and stalled. OpenGL is not supported and is is very bland and lacking in features. If you are running a PC with low RAM (eg 128) Win 2k will really struggle. It is suitable for a small business network where the owner is trying to sidestep paying Microsoft for several copies and activations of XP. For a fresh install and with the right spec machine it is undoubtedly hugely more stable than 9x versions (you get crashes, but they don't crash the whole OS). However XP is out and is a far superior OS in all cases.

5 out of 5 stars A gigantic improvement over NT.   July 14, 2003

The amount of BSODs have all but disappeared. If you have a laptop, you can't go wrong with this. NT on a laptop was a nightmare, but this is a great OS for it!

4 out of 5 stars Good OS for heavy duty tasks   June 11, 2003

I've been using W2K since 1999 (MSDN Beta 3) and bought the whole OS in early 2000. I've been working with it since and has been one of the best decisions I've ever made when it comes to stable OSs. It's a great upgrade since it makes things way easier the way they were on NT 4, but it also has its downsides. It's not easy to learn for the average computer user, meaning that you've got to be more aware the way your computer works, although no special training is required (you can learn just by reading thoroughly the help files or finding advice on the net). Sometimes programs crash (although Windows does not), but can leave a fairly unstable environment to work with, and if that happens, well, Windows becomes stupid, and maybe, you'll have to reboot. UNIX based systems are a better choice, but in a growing Windows world, this one is a good headstart into the corporate computing environment.

Oh, BTW, take your eyes off Windows XP (either Home or Pro). It'll only slow you down. Better get this one.
