Garmin tech support excellent September 5, 2008 Hi all,
I just got my Garmin Nuvi 760 and it's wonderful. It did not come with the 2009 city map upgrade but Garmin tech support unlocked the update online and walked me thru all the steps to complete the process. I also updated all relavent software as well. This unit works, so far, as advertized. One thing though, you should take the time to set this unit up before you take it on a road trip. I downloaded and looked through the entire owner's manual. Then called Garmin tech support when I thought I needed too. I never had to wait longer than 18 minutes. Connected my Iphone via Bluetooth and all is working well. Have not played with the card slot yet, but I'm looking into Garmin's Audio Books.
I will keep updating this review as I go along
Enjoy
Better Than a Map or Built in GPS September 5, 2008 My job has me traveling frequently by plane to many cities in the U.S. The portability of this GPS is what makes it so useful. If you have a GPS built into your car you can't really travel with it. Before my trips I save the addresses of my customers along with restaurants, airports, car rental returns, hotels or other locations so that I can find my way between any of them at any time. You can also have the GPS plan the best route for your entire day. The 760 gives you turn by turn visual and voice directions so you can keep your eyes on the road.
Even though I updated the maps to the 2009 version, I still run into areas of new construction that are not in the unit. You need to use common sense and follow the road signs. Sometimes it has trouble distinguishing between a highway and adjacent service road, but again no big deal just use common sense. If you miss a turn, or a detour takes you out of the planned route, the GPS immediately recalculates a new route. It provides an estimated time of arrival at destination and gives you information on traffic delays. It also displays the speed limit of the current road.
My biggest complaint is the sound quality of the hands free Blue Tooth phone link. It works best when you link the unit through the FM radio to hear it through the speakers, but then you can't listen to any local programming and you have to fiddle with it as you travel to avoid being tuned into an active station. I have chosen not to use this feature on the GPS and instead bought a separate portable hands free Blue Tooth for my phone.
It is a very useful tool for getting you from place to place and I would not travel without it.
Garmin Nuvi 760 September 5, 2008 I recently purchase the Garmin 760 GPS found it very easy to used. Great for finding new locations and with thousands POI finding local resturants is a breeze. The best option is the real time traffic reporting, this GPS notifies me abput traffic backup location on by daily commute and alternative ways to get around the jams. A real time saver..
excelent product best GPS for car September 5, 2008 I purchased this unit after a very disappointing experience with the TomTom 720, which couldn't even locate my 1978-vintage house and suggested some odd routes (see my TomTom 720 review). The Garmin Nuvi 760 found my house, suggested eactly the routes I usually take on my test trips and does SO much more very, very well.
The interface in general is very easy - the go to interface has 6 million points of interest. It had every restaurant that came to mind for my look-up test. Some rather new. Wow.
The screen is very crisp and clear. The bluetooth was no problem to set up with my Blackberry 8703e (Sprint) and now all the points of interest are that much more useful with phone numbers / call options for each.
It has great setting features - like being able to go from an "ABC" key layout to QWERTY, or selecting from an "automobile", "bicycle", or "pedestrian" mode - very handy.
It also adds a great direct "where am I" feature that gives your position at the touch of a button and then lists all the emergency service links (police, fire, hospital) on the side (you can also see those through the POI list).
It had multi-segment trip ability AND simulated GPS run through of a route - so it takes you through a route as if you were driving it, when you're really just at the kitchen table.
Okay, so great features that so far seem to be executed well, but I don't want those to take away from what really impressed me about the unit the most: very accurate and great routing - which after all are the key GPS functions and ones which at least the other company I tried seemed to miss on.
Garmin 760 September 4, 2008 Good piece of equipment. Initially, I did have a problem when trying to activate the integrated FM receiver, but it's now working and is absolutely great! Once the three month free trail has expired I will most definitely become a subscriber. The Bluetooth is good (hands free are law now in CA) the overall reception is okay but not perfect. I brought the dashboard mount as the suction cup is illegal in CA, besides which is a devil to remove, this thing does not move even when making a harsh cornering maneuver.
Overall I would not hesitate in recommending this unit, price and delivery from Amazon was first class.
