Nice Compact GPS November 19, 2004 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I decide to get Legend C over Vista C, because the only difference is the altimeter and the stationary compass. If you are moving Legend C will activate the compass and show you the direction of the north. This unit comes only with basic map with highway, no local street, making it useless without additional map software City Select North America V6, which cost over a hundred dollars. I got the map software from GPSNOW and it's great. With the traffic on the freeway/highway I always wanted to use the side street near downtown LA, but concerned about getting lost and I never took side street. But after I got this GPS with map, I tested the unit near the city by taking the side street I never took. It beeps me before the turn, and if I made a wrong turn it automatically reroute the map and I got to the destination without any problem. PROS: very compact, nice color even in daytime, battery last long. map reroute quick. CONS: must get City Select map, small screen might be problem of some people. the rocker button does not click well. for left handed use.
Absolutely phenomenal October 29, 2004 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I had regular Legend for a year and I was not 100% happy with it because the screen was very small and not really useful. I had a change to sell it so I bought Legend C. As usually happens you expect to find good things and bed things. I was amazed to find out that this unit is absolutely phenomenal. This is not an update to Legend but a totally new unit: *New features: 24MB memory vs. 8MB in legend *New 200MHz processor: Operates about 3 times faster then legend *Excellent color screen that in fact very readable and bigger then legend *New software (operating system) with much more choices. *More logical and flexible unit operation. *External power connection, USB port. My biggest test was to try to navigate with this unit in the car. I was pleasantly surprised that it's doable. The unit navigates very good and provides visual and audible directions. I would not recommend using it for everyday car usage but on weekends trips this will do very good job for the money. It finds POI quickly and navigates to them. I am extremely happy with it. It's king of take it anywhere unit that does it all. And for a reasonable price.
Cons: You must use Gamin Mapping S/W which costs about $150. Garmin is not playing a nice game here. No NEMA interface (Gamin - why?) No external memory slot.
Conclusion:
If you read my Cons and you can live with them - run and get this unit. You will love it.
Send a message to Garmin. Do not buy this unit. October 29, 2004 23 out of 43 found this review helpful
I received this unit as a gift. It does NOT work with most software on the market. If you buy this unit you will find yourself tied to Garmin Software. You will not be able to use anything you already own! You will not be able to use the National Geographic range of software. You will be tied to high price poor quality software provided by Garmin even though this device supports USB you will not be able to use a Mac, because Garmin only support windows, and they have never done that very well.
Send a message to Garmin. Do not buy this unit. They are aggressive, anti-user and care not 1 dot about your enjoyment or safety. They provide sub-standard software - maps etc - at high prices, and now they FORCE you to use it. YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS. Others provide better maps. Better software. Others do a better job and Garmin software sales suffered. So rather than improve their software, they force you to use only their software. they removed support for the most universally accepted standard - NMEA.
This unit has a hard time showing you where you are going because the base map does not contain the detail you require in order to ensure you are on the route you need to be on. Forget this unit if you want to hike.
I for one have gone back to my Sportrak. I also sent this review to Garmin.
Very happy with it... October 16, 2004 56 out of 58 found this review helpful
There really isn't much to say about the Legend C - it's an awesome little GPS that lives up to it's promise of packing a lot of features into a small package. The color display is great - you don't really appreciate how much better your brain processes graphic information in color until you experience it. The display's update and refresh rate is also a lot faster - the map display really feels like it's working in real-time while the earlier Legend and Vista did not. The Legend lacks the Vista's electronic compass and barometric altimeter, but for me this is actually a plus becuase the GPS-only elevation is more usable in certain situations (like in a moving car or on an airplane with a pressurized cabin). So even though the Legend C is less expensive than the Vista I think it's the better of the two units.
An Excellent Choice September 16, 2004 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
I sold my B&W Legend and got the new color version, it was definitely worth it! The differences are greater than I thought between the Legend and the Legend C.
First and MOST IMPORTANT to me is that the unit redraws map screens a lot faster than my old Legend. Panning and zooming were my only real complaint on my old Legend and this is MUCH improved!! With a relatively small screen, I find myself needing to pan and zoom a lot to "get the picture" around me and this is now a problem of the past. It's worth upgrading for this reason alone.
Next, obviously, is the color display. The color display was more than I hoped for, it reads very well in daylight, and the adjustable backlight works great. Most of all, the color display gives contrast between contour lines, roads, boundaries and such. In fact, the unit does a better job of displaying maps than MapSource on a PC. It thickens up roads and provides different widths and colors for major/minor roads. Also, icons on this really stand out. I am waiting for my copy of City Select so that I can use the auto-route feature, I think I will end up using this all the time on the road with that functionality.
You can customize the pages and the order of those pages that are scrolled through which is also very handy, if you don't use some pages then you can take them out or the page-scroll sequence. What you remove from the page sequence will end up in the main menu. The in-screen menus/options are accessed with a button, rather than taking up screen space and overeall setup is very customizable as always.
Excellent job Garmin!
