1 out of 5 stars Only useful in Nebraska   January 13, 2004

I was very excited when I first heard of this product. But after several workouts, I am only frustrated. The unit loses GPS signal too often, even in moderately open areas. If you live in the Northwest or workout in an urban area, forget this GPS. Your distances will never match, your pace is not accurate so why would you use this? I am very upset that such a product could ever be advertised this way. I have never been more unsatisified buying a product than I have with the Forerunner. If you live in a midwest rural area you will probably have no problems, but other than that, just stick with your stopwatch.

If you are looking at this product, you will like it. I won't rehash all the other reviews specifics as they are pretty accurate. Mine took a while to "find itself" the first time I used it. The 4 times I've used it since only took a minute or so. It is easy to use (menu driven interface is very intuitive and the display is big enough to easily read while running), seems very accurate, is fun (cool to have a "dashboard" while running) and allows me to log track my running without being confined to a measured route! As long as it continues to perform, I love it.

If you are a runner, this is definitely worth $124!

4 out of 5 stars Piece of Crap, (but I wouldn't run without it)   January 10, 2004

I wear a heart rate monitor on my left wrist and the Forerunner 201 on my right. Like the heart rate monitor, it's a useful training aid, but it's not very dependable.

My biggest peeve is that it seems to throw away data that it doesn't think is good enough. Part of my regular run includes a 4 mile loop in tall evergreen trees. Most of the time there is no signal, but every 5-10 minutes I come into a clearing and I get a reading, for maybe 2 seconds. Distance is calculated using a straight line. I know I haven't been running in a straight line, and the distance number is definitely too small, but I am at least happy because I see progress.

Then when I finally do get a strong enough signal, the unit calculates my distance using a straight line between my CURRENT point and the last time it had a GOOD signal. I guess my collection 3-4 poor reading is considered bad data, so the unit throws them away. Since I just ran in a loop, the distance actually goes backward. That's really lame to finally get a reading after a 10 minute wait, and have it be less than your last 3 readings. All that work is just wasted.

1 out of 5 stars Died after one day   January 8, 2004

My Garmin Forerunner lasted one day before it stopped working. Now I have to go to the post office and pay to have it shipped back to Garmin, and wait to have them either repair or replace it. Next time I need to purchase an electronics item I'll go to a regular store where I can easily and immediately exchange a defective unit.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome running tool!!   January 7, 2004

This is probably the best thing made for runners since the heart rate monitor. The first time I used it I used it for cross country skiing and it was great! Gave me my pace and accurate distances! I'm anxious to try the software - wish it was available before Feb. - and I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can use it running on trails! I'd definitely recommend it!
