5 out of 5 stars Great Device!   May 31, 2008
I recently started to get serious about running.I came across this device and it is fufilling all of my expections. It has a quick set up guide, for those who want to run right away.It has the standard stop watch but also contains such features as a distance tracker and even a virtual trainer so runners can continue to improve their running. The feature i enjoy the most is the GPS function. For trail runners you can track your course, so you'll never get lost and i live in Japan and i'm using it here. Great Device.

1 out of 5 stars Surprised how bad it was   May 11, 2008

Knowing Garmin's great reputation for products, I was disappointed that my Forerunner 101 was such a poor investment. I probably only used it 10 times before the plastic molding that holds one of the strap pins in BROKE. And I certainly was not using outside the realm of any reasonable runner. If it had been the pin that broke, no problem, I'd get a new pin. But since it was the plastic itself, it basically renders it useless. The device is now attached to the strap by one pin and flaps on my wrist if I try to wear it. Not only that, it nevers got good satellite pick-up and, contrary to what Garmin says, the device loses connection if I go under trees, etc. Since the plastic broke after the 90-day repair time, I have to pay $60 at least as a repair fee. That is almost half the cost of a new one. No way! All in all, very disappointed in what I expected to be a great running aid.

5 out of 5 stars Love it   April 18, 2008
The Forerunner works great. I love knowing exactly how far I've run. I thought it might be too big but the size is fine. I usually forget it's there once I get going. It would be nice if it was rechargeable but for the price I can afford to buy batteries.

5 out of 5 stars Great Motivator   April 2, 2008
I recently picked up one of these Forerunner 101's from Amazon and I have to say that my running (or at least my desire to run) has increased since getting it. I have to run for my yearly Air Force fitness test and I traditionally have hated to run since I am no good at keeping my pace (either running too fast at first and burning out or too slow and having to kill myself catching up) but I really like the Forerunner for helping me out in that area. The device is very accurate and the battery life is very good. The time to sync up with the GPS satellites is very fast (I have noticed that it links up faster if you stand still while you wait). It is hardly noticable on my wrist as it is very light in weight and the wrist strap is comfortable. The setup and usage of the menus were very well thought out and easy to use. I would definately recommend this device for anyone to help in their daily workout.

4 out of 5 stars Good and Reliable   March 6, 2008
I bought this from amazon after having a real bad experience with the Navman 300 which I got from Marshalls. The Navman 300 had a weak display that would cut in and out and the device at times would freeze up and would not display the correct pace. This all happened to me while I was running in the 2007 L.A. Marathon; which brings us to the Garmin Forerunner 101.

I returned the stupid Navman 300 and got the Garmin Forerunner 101. The Garmin Forerunner 101 is solid. Just put it on, establish a signal, hit the start button and you're off. It has a super clear display. It even has a button to light up the screen for a few seconds if you're running at night so you could see the display. The signal is decent but not great. If you want to start it up indoors while you're getting ready to run, forget about it. Go outside and wait 2-5 minutes. You'll get used to this, it wasn't a big issue for me. But you have to make sure you're not running or walking in a heavily populated area of tall trees, or else it'll lose the connection with the satellites. I used this Garmin 101 in the 2008 L.A. Marathon and was impressed. I used the "virtual partner" mode to finish within my desired time that I set as my goal. While I failed miserably(although I still finished, barely), I realized that this device is more than just a distance calculator. It can really help you track your progress and reach your goals if you put in the effort(which I didn't). It has many other modes that I haven't used yet. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because of the inability to hook this up to a computer and transfer your stats. But for under a $100, I can live with that.
