Nice little tool. June 13, 2008 This is a nice sized unit. The display is adequate in size and VERY clear. I especially like the fact that the screen is so clear in sunlight. The only problem is that it is a bit difficult to read when in the shade or mottled shade. The auto-night screen is very handy as the contrast changes to be more useful at night. I have already dopped it a few times with no ill results. The buttons and menus seem to be arranged in a logical fashion. However, the toggle could be slightly larger so that one doesn't accidentally toggle to the wrong place. My thumb is large so this is a bit of an issue. It uses 2 AA batteries, which I favor as that is what my camera and flashlight use. Therefore I only need one type of batteries on a trip and can always use the batteries from another device as spares if my actual spare supply is depleted. I haven't had this long, so can't be more specific on features. However, this unit was recommended by a professional surveyor as a good unit for the money.
Garmin 60CSx June 13, 2008 Garmin 60CSx returned, because half of menu buttons did not function. Amazon promptly replaced with new functioning unit.
Great for GeoCaching June 13, 2008 I bought this item primarily for geocaching, although I do hiking with it also. It's rugged, easy on batteries, and works like a champ! Finds and stays with satellites much easier than the older model which my friend has (60c). The altimeter is very useful as well for hiking. Love that it is compatible with geocaching.com, so I can download caches directly into the device, mark them as found, etc. The "find next nearest" feature is invaluable. The only slight con I would say is that if it gets too close to a magnet, the heading compass can get screwed up. But it's nothing a quick recallibration won't fix. Get the map software as well - that is of course useful when you're in the car, but also great for those neighborhood geocaches where it's hard to tell exactly how to get to a cache (ie which roads to take).
VERY SIMPLE June 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm not even going to go into detail on the technical capacity of this unit. Having spent almost 20 years struggling with terrible e trex things, 12XL's and their external antennas, geckos and the like, finally Garmin have got it right. If you are going into the rainforest, or any other forest for that matter, BUY THIS GPS. It is fast, extremely accurate and works even under thick canopy cover. For years we couldn't understand wy Garmin didn't upgrade the 12XL and we've even been buying reconditioned units as this was still the only machine that (with its ext. antenna) worked in the forest. The 60CSx is their answer and it works like a treat. This is as good as you can get for a reliable GPS for forest field-work. Plain and simple
Garmin 60CSX June 10, 2008 This is a great handheld GPS. The 60csx acquires a signal so much faster than the Etrex Vista I have. I have noticed a considerable difference even in cover, this unit stays acquired to the satellites. I'm so impressed that I'm purchasing another for my wife.
