4 out of 5 stars very good!   January 30, 2007
it does what expected. the only issue if it is one is the quality of the sound - a little low and for mp3 not really useable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent device   January 29, 2007
First GPS device I've used and it is excellent. The display is easily readable and the device is relatiavely simple to use. Very usable navigational map and voice instructions. Very good features.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS   January 27, 2007
Everything about this GPS works as advertised. Giving street names along with directions, the bluetooth connection for the cell phone, the computer interface for updates, the ease of operation, everything works flawlesly. Haven't had the fm traffic aleart work yet because there has been no need so far.

5 out of 5 stars We were not disapointed!   January 26, 2007

The Garmin Street Pilot c550 has met all our expectations and most importantly, it is very user friendly. For the past two weeks we have been experimenting locally and feel very comfortable with the results. The real test will be made when we leave on vacation next week and access unknown routes in the vacation area. We smile when we hear the tone of voice of the "instructor" when we decide to alter the recommended route!

Friends have another brand system and c550 is more user friendly - especially having the names of streets, exit numbers from interstates and instructions in plenty of time to position our car in the appropriate lane for making a turn. We were pleased with the prompt service from Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful product, after initially reliability problems   January 23, 2007
RATING UPDATE: 5 stars, based on resolution of problem mentioned below

My wife and I both had used GPS years ago while living in France, and it has taken a while for the units in the US to be as good. We finally opted for the Garmin Streetpilot c550, and were very pleased -- at first.

The unit set was easy. It locked on the satellites after less than 5 minutes on the intiial startup, and much faster after that. The interface was easy. The directions were accurate. The voice prompts--announcing the street names--were clear and enormously helpful. The points of interests are very useful, although we found some surprising misses for the restaurants. We used the unit on a trip to Death Valley, and found that even dirt roads were included. The traffic updates appear to work correctly. The Bluetooth for the phone was easy to set up and use. The traffic reports (at least for L.A.) have been useful, but not perfect, often being out of date.

But then the unit died for no reason after 8 days of use. Such unreliability is very frustrating, especially as my wife was depending on it that day for a series of meetings. I was able to get a tech rep very quickly. He was friendly and professional. He agreed that the unit needed to be serviced (of course, you must pay for the postage). A new unit arrived after a week. The same problem occured after 8 days of use. Customer Service said that a bug had been discovered in the software, and a new release was just made available. Once that was installed, the system has worked flawlessly.

Warning for California drivers: You can not use the windshield mount in CA. You will need to either use the permanent mounting disk, or get a different dashboard mount from Garmin.
