| Customer Reviews:
psumom November 10, 2007 I bought the Tom Tom GO 510 for my daughter for her birthday. She was getting married and moving from the east coast to the west coast. We drove cross country with her using the Tom Tom and it was great. Not one missed turn. She uses it all the time to get around her new city. She would be lost without it. We also liked the fact that it was bluetooth ready without having to subscribe to any additional service.
Not the worst investment October 29, 2007 Caveats abound with this mostly okay navigator. First, don't trust that it knows which restaurants and points of interest are still open or closed. Second, in areas with lots of recent road development, don't expect TomTom to be aware that what it thinks is farmland was just recently paved over. Thrid, the voice keeps cutting out on us lately, and if we're not paying attention to the screen, there's no guarantee we'll be warned to take the next exit. We've had to backtrack at least five times based on this machine's faulty instructions. I think it's a much better tool to use when planning ahead of time (while you're on a long stretch of road) as to where you're going next than relying on the step-by-step instructions.
Not a five star product...let's be honest here... October 20, 2007 I bought this after reading a lot of reviews, here and other websites. I wanted an easy to use GPS at a bargain price, I wanted sound, preferably a sexy british female voice, I wanted it to synch with my bluetooth phone too. I thought it was a pretty good bargain, and I did find a lot of features that I like.
But, certain things with this, and other TOMTOM's are flawed. Registering new maps is a major pain...I downloaded the map for italy last night and it took me 4 hours to get it going. During that time, my screen went blank...after a lot of research I learned that this is a common problem and that you can take a pin, find a reset hole on the bottom, and resset it when it happens. Still, should one have to do this for a 5 star device? I don't think so. Back to the registering of maps...like I said, I bought it legally and downloaded it to the 510...no problem. But when I tried to get it started it wanted me to enter a code...when I entered the code given by the website it told me it wasn't the correct code... after more online research I learned that if this happens you have to download another 'clear flash memory' program, run it, and then the password will work...OK, at least they have such a program, but why not give a correct error message, and why should it happen in the first place? I will keep the tomtom because it's not worth the time to trade it for another company's GPS, but buyer beware, this is not a five star item.
excellent October 3, 2007 I am an Army Officer and bought this particularly because I was moving to three different Posts for training and a change of station. While I bought the product at the end of June, I reserved my review until after I drove from Central NY to Fort Sill OK, 1500 miles. Honestly, this trip would have been bad without the GPS. It gave me accurate directions for all 21 plus hours of the trip, in addition to giving great directions for local trips. It has only been wrong one time since I've owned it and that was because old map data after they re-routed a road. PRO's : -Accurate directions -Easy to read LCD (even in the sun) -Connects to my cellphone via Bluetooth (saved 75 bucks on buying a headset) - quickly re-routes you if you make a wrong turn CONS: -Older Map data (only nailed me once and it wasnt a big deal) -Not a huge list of POI's
I'd give up my girlfriend before I'd give up my Tom Tom
