Bad product, bad customer support, false advertisement August 29, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this model, along with the iPod cable kit, and the FM Transmitter so I can have both a GPS and a way to listen to my iPod on my car speakers.
I had problems with this since the beginning. The first thing I did was connect the TomTom to my computer and updated the software. I choose the internet option in TomTom Home to activate my TomTom. It said it activated fine, but when I took it away from the computer, the TomTom still requested me to active. So naturally, I went to their activation website, did all the things to get the activation things and got the code. Simple enough (NOT!). After entering the activation code, the TomTom kept saying it wasn't the correct code. I checked, double checked, and 10X checked the codes. I even asked a few people to check the code for me. The code was correct, the TomTom said it wasn't. I tried the online activation again. I tried reflashing the TomTom with the original backup I had. All no luck. Somehow I managed to change the map to Guam, and it was magically activated. YAY! It works! BUT I CAN'T CHANGE IT TO THE USA MAPS!!!!!
Day 2 (maybe 3), I manage to find the option to change to the USA maps (since "advanced" options are off by default, I didn't immediately see a way to change the map). Finally it works.
Once I was able to use it, I found out how even more frustrating this GPS is. Browsing the map is impossible. As you try to move the map around, it glitches and either doesn't move the direction you wanted it to move, or it somehow detects that you pushed the return icon. I gave up ever using function ever again after an hour of trying. Also, the maps are outdated and/or lack any effort. There were countless streets that appeared on the map, but was labeled as "unnamed."
Now on to the iPod function. With the regular mount, as soon as the iPod cable is connected, Bluetooth functionality breaks. You can make and receive calls, but you can't hear any of the phone calls. What use is a cell phone that you can't hear??
When you connect the iPod to the FM Transmitter, the FM transmission completely stops and it only outputs sounds to the internal speakers. After wasting 2 months with TomTom customer support regarding this FM Transmitter issue, I received the following response:
"Yes, we did receive your items. I've tested your scenario with your device and with our in-house devices. It appears to simply be a limitation of the TomTom product. Unfortunately, I do not have a fix for you.
I've notified product management of the issue, however, there probably won't be a fix for the 510/910 models, as they are no longer being manufactured. Any fix would most likely be implemented with future products only."
After mentioning that it explicitly states that the TomTom 510 and the FM Transmitter works together, I received the following response:
"That is, perhaps, a misnomer. I will forward this information on to our Product Management team for research. However, it simply doesn't function the way it was stated on the website."
This product is a complete waste of your money. DO NOT BUY IT!!!
TomTom Review August 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unit does a good job with directions. On trips, time computed is way off and corrects too slowly. For the price the 510 is a good purchase.
glaring August 21, 2007 After reviewing this GPS online, I bought it from radio shack for $300. I took it back the next day as the brightness was inadequate and the glare was so bad, I could not read it.
I did use it for one day and compared to my Magellan 2200T (which I can see fine), it was slow. It would tell me to take a turn after I had already taken it. Thus, with the glare and the speed issue, I gave up on it after one day. Maybe I got a lemon, who knows? Good luck.
AWEFUL GUI AND SERVICE August 17, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the worst piece of electronics I have bought in my life. Unfriendly GUI, very difficult to see the route the GPS selects (other than your present location). I got error messages both times I loaded a SW update that required long calls to customer support. The map update required a long activation code with spaces, but the GPS device does not allow one to enter spaces...more time on the phone with customer support. Ugg. Do not buy this product, pick another vendor.
tomtom 510 review August 3, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
worked pretty much out of the box. had a few issues setting up the computer connect, but relatively easy. I have a treo 700p, and am not happy with the fact that the live traffic won't work with it. also, the treo 700p and tomtom continuously need to manually be reconnnected for bluetooth use. not sure if its the treo or the tomtom, but i think its the treo.
