I guess other people don't mind being forced to register before being allowed to use a product. I don't think even Microsoft does that. I got so frustrated trying to get the software unlocked that I felt like throwing the thing away and just taking a loss. As the other guy wrote, it's clear when there isn't much competition.
I found the instructions vague. All Garmin had to do was provide an unlock key with the product and ask for it to be entered, like everyone else does. Instead, they forced me to register, and hinted very strongly that I provide an email address if I wanted my unlock code. They provided an 8 digit code in order for me to apply for my 25 digit code. I couldn't see the whole setup as anything but a process to squeeze me into registering and providing and address, email addy, and full name. I spelled my name in a way that I'll know what junk mail comes from Garmin. So, we'll see if they lied about selling the info or not.
If I can find a GPS unit as functional as Garmin, I'll try them out for any future buys. I don't like being forced to jump through hoops after a company already has my money, but won't deliver the promised product until I do so. I guess it doesn't bother some people to have their info constantly circulating about.

I read alot of the reviews and was skeptical about buying. But I bit the bullet and ordered because without the software my Garmin 76CX was not complete (even though you spend alot of money on the GPS).
So after all is said and done, the software was easy to install and relatively easy to use. It made the GPS more useable for the street.
Too Expensive and Not Current April 1, 2008

This item is very expensive and only allows use on one gps unit ! If you have two Garmin units then you will have to buy two copies of these maps. That gets expensive fast.
It is not that current, especially the points of interest ( POI's ).
But, we have no other choice do we ? If you own a Garmin then they force you to only use their expensive and outdated maps. We have no choice. Sad :(
Anyway, despite the big flaws, it does work and you can use it to route from A to B, assuming A and B are in the map database. You hope and pray.
I use this on my cool, new, awesome Garmin Colorado 300 ( which I love ), however I had to shell out an extra $200 for the Topo 2008 and the City Navigator NT maps to make it do anything useful. Way too expensive.
They do now have a new version of this map out for the Apple Mac and there is also the version on SD/MicroSD card. The new 2009 version is due out any time now in all these formats so if you want the latest map version wait a few weeks for it. Check the Garmin Website for all the details.
Problem of no competition March 28, 2008
The only reason someone would buy this is because its the only software that works with Garmin GPS. Microsoft and Rand McNally mapping software are notably superior in ease of use, flexibility, cheaper, and over all better in function- but these do not work with Garmin GPs - so you are stuck with an inferior product.

Best gps maps great POI database they have places so small and remote I couldent believe the accuracy plus saves on 4111 because it has the phone number listed also!
