Nuvi 660's bluetooth feature is surprisingly useful, better bet than Nuvi 650. December 31, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I upgraded from a Garmin C320 with the 3.5 inch screen, what a difference the 4.3 inch screen makes! It's so much easier to see the route ahead. Earlier the 3D feature of the maps was not so useful unless you zoomed out. It's a pleasure to see the Nuvi 660s bright and big screen and now I use the 3-D feature of the map.
The SirfSTAR III chip makes routing very fast. The routing is faster and different from the Garmin C320 and usually more accurate. If you turn on the WAAS system which is turned off by default it can detect changes between 10-15 ft if you go off course, and re-routes you.
I took the 660 for a 5 day trip to Florida and it had all the POIs we needed like Disney and Universal parks. We also took it to the Smoky Mountains, TN. In the wilderness of Smokies, none of the cellphones had coverage - Verizon, AT&T etc. only the Nuvi worked. We had a flat tire right in the middle of the park and were stumped - we could not even call AAA as the cell phones did not work - then we remembered that we had the Nuvi. It gave us several options to buy new tires and calculated whether we'd get there before closing time. We had the phone numbers on the Nuvi too, so as soon as we got reception we were able to call several locations to find out if the shop had the tires we needed. It really saved us from what could have been a disaster - and could have cost us an extra day.
I used both the Nuvi 650 and 660. The bluetooth feature of the 660 takes the GPS to another level. The 660 also includes traffic alerts which are nice to have for the first 3 months when it is free, but not very useful in your home city as you'll know the traffic patterns better than the GPS. However, the bluetooth is very useful. It synced with my phone easily and shows ALL the menus of my phone on the big bright screen. I can see missed calls, last dialled calls etc. and also the complete contact list. If you get a call the GPS shows you the incoming call screen with 2 big buttons saying "Answer/ Ignore". I find it much more safer than trying to look at my cell phone while driving. There are fun benefits like when you are looking for a restaurant you not only get directions but you can also touch the GPS screen to call them and make reservations. Beats trying to key in the number into your cell phone while trying to drive!
The 660 comes with a black leather case, owner's manual, USB cable and a wall charger unlike the 650 which only comes with a USB cable and none of the other accessories. In addition, the car charger of the 660 includes an inbuilt traffic antenna which gives you free traffic alerts for the first 3 months. Both the 650 and 660 have an expansion card slot in which you can load MP3s or audiobooks for listening in the car. The inbuilt FM transmitter can connect to your car speaker system through an FM channel. However, I found that this option is not useful as the connection through the FM band had some static which gets magnified on your car speaker system.
Driving to new places has become such a pleasure due to the Nuvi 660, it is so much better compared to the C320 or even C530 which I used previously. Also buy the friction "bean bag" mount, it makes the Nuvi doubly useful as you and your passenger can have easy access to it. It is a much better solution than mounting your Nuvi on the windshield.
I recommend it. December 31, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the most common complains I saw in previous reviews is that nuvi proposes the rout, which as people think is not perfect. Guys, com on... If you know the area well, there is absolutely no sense to use GPS. But even in this case (I tested it in my home area) nuvi 660 offered me the rout which was better, than I used before. But I just say again: the main advantage is to use this device in unfamiliar areas. I just returned from Florida, where I spent driving around about two weeks in Orlando and Tamp/Sarasota areas, and I can say: nuvi 660 was perfect. I have never been in Florida before, and I never opened the map. Nuvi handled everything. I never had any problem to get to the point I wanted: Disney parks, local stores or restourants, airport, etc... It was the real pleasure to drive with this device instaled in your car. BTW, even though I never had problems with the suction mounting device, I prefer the bin bag. It's more rliable, and it's much faster to be reinstalled if you park park your car and want to hide it. I also had a chance to test my nuvi 660 in wst Michigan (also unfamiliar area), and it also worked well. I would highly recommnend this GPS.
Excellent navigation at an affordable price December 31, 2007 I bought this product from Amazon for $399.00 during the black Friday sale (2007). Eventhough I chose the free shipping option, it arrived within 4 business days. I am very happy with this product. The built-in map is very accurate. Most of the times, the GPS gives less than 12 foot accuracy.
Strengths: Very accurate and responsive. Re-routing works very well. User interface is very simple and easy to follow. Great screen.
Weakness: Build quality is poor. External antena. FM transmitter is very weak.
Summary: Great GPS at an affordable price. Will recomend to anyone who is looking for a reliable GPS system.
Nuvi 660 is worth it December 31, 2007 Got it for a trip out of state and it's worth every penny when driving around a state you don't know. It was good having confidence on how to get around all those towns and most important how to get back to the place you're staying in when it's late and you don't want to think too hard.
1st night we missed an exit driving down some new highway but the 660 just rerouted us. The traffic is somewhat useful but I think more relevant when you're in major cities.
Only con is that I know my neighborhood pretty well. Some roads, while more direct, are actually longer due to lights and traffic. I would expect to have the same problem elsewhere as well but it's not like I'd know in an unfamiliar city.
Oh, and the best part, when stuck in traffic I can find all the secret bat cave back roads and drive like a local around the bad spots.
Get the best at the best deal place December 31, 2007 This was a recent anniversary present and I have to say it has fulfilled my expectations. Not to mention catching Amazon's Black Friday deal helped out my wife who bought it for me. Over Xmas we traveled out of state to spend time at a cabin in the mountains. Needless to say the Nuvi 660 got us right there even though it was dark and we were driving in fog we were never lost. Fast forward to Xmas eve. We just got out of Mass in Asheville and my wife remembered we needed eggs. It was past 6 pm and everything was closed. Punched in convenience stores and up they came with phone numbers. Called around and found one that was open until 8 pm and had eggs. No wasted time or gas. Just the best. The Nuvi also has great screen resolution and is simple to operate. Some things are not so intuitive so you need to play around with it and find where things are. Especially the points of interest. Example: rest stops are under the Auto services category. The only downside is that Travel advisories are paid subscription and they are pretty generic. Other manufacturers offer this service for free. These devices are not perfect especially at large interchanges and where roads have multiple designations, but all in all this beats a map and flashlight and saves you all the potential aggravation that goes with having a someone looking a map giving you directions while you are driving at 70 mph in a strange place. This is the best piece of electronics since the cell phone.
