3 out of 5 stars Not bad for the directionally challenged like me   November 30, 2007

We purchased this about 2 months ago and it works relatively well for us. I have a tendency to get lost anywhere, even when I have clear directions, so in those instances it's been great. It reroutes you very quickly and although I have been told several times to "turn around when possible" (especially on new roads) it doesn't do it often. If you ignore it long enough it will reroute again. I don't like the fact that turn by turn directions don't have street names or exit numbers, however. I have accidently turned down the wrong street or gotten off the exit too soon because I am not good at estimating yards and take the turn when it first says turn right, not when it actually wants me to. However, every time I do this it will figure out where I am and reroute me to get where I need to go, so it still meets the function I wanted it for. I like that it is portable and once you get the hang of the functions, very easy to use. I have already dropped it, though, so I plan on investigating a case or cover; something to protect it from my clumsiness. I haven't bothered with the mounting function so I can't speak to that. The points of interest function is great, but be careful. Not all of the listings are accurate; when I tried to find a CVS, it directed me to a CVS company building, not the pharmacy. The GPS didn't distinguish so we couldn't tell until we got there and it was not a pharmacy. It can also be a little tricky to actually find the place that you want in the menu, but it has helped me find restaurants and libraries relatively well. The bluetooth option does not work with my Verizon phone, but for the moment I have not missed the functions. It is, however, disappointing to not be able to use it. Overall, I like it and it works well for us at the moment. When we choose a new one in a few years, though, I would like one that says street names and I will do a little checking for overall compatibility with bluetooth functions.

5 out of 5 stars The best GPS for the money   November 29, 2007

This is the greatest thing I've bought in a long time. Forget about maps. Forget about getting lost. Now you can enjoy the scenery on your trip instead of trying to find yourself on a map or stopping for directions.

I think this is an excellent product.
Easy to use and reasonably priced.
I am very pleased and I'll never get lost again

5 out of 5 stars Very good inexpensive GPS   November 27, 2007

I got my TomTom One Limited Edition (with SD card slot) on Black Friday sale and I really like it. I have used Garmin Nuvi 350 for a while and liked it too. Both units are comparable in size and in performance, except that the TomTom One is 2.5x cheaper than Nuvi 350. I tested TT and Nuvi to see how they perform in a new housing subdivision in my neighborhood. They made exactly the same mistakes not recognizing new streets and telling me to drive into the same house where both units showed a non-existing road. This wasn't a major setback for me. Maps do need to be constantly updated, but in real life situation these minor errors wouldn't stop me from eventually finding my way around.

I compiled a list of more important differences I found between the two units. I listed them as someone who just needs a basic, solid, intuitive and accurate navigation while driving. I don't need the GPS to be a telephone, MP3 player, portable shower, etc.

Bad things about TomTom One in comparison to Nuvi 350:
- Rather cheesy mounting and not as easy to disconnect as Nuvi. This is a big deal if you need to take it out frequently to hide from unethical passersby or to plan new routes in the comfort of your home.
- TT doesn't turn On automatically when you start the car, although it can be set to auto turn Off 10 sec. after the ignition.
- The TT doesn't dim automatically to night mode and back like the Nuvi does; you need three taps on the screen to do it.

Now the good things about TomTom in comparison to Nuvi:
- Two and a half times less expensive, and by that I mean the rock-bottom sale prices for new units ($119 for TT One and $299 for Nuvi 350).
- Less pointless talking. I found the constant "recalculating" announcements of Nuvi quite annoying after a while. Spoken street names aren't necessary to me either, but I can see that someone else may find this feature valuable. I preferred the simple spoken announcements of TT.
- Although the official TomTom support is apparently lacking, there is a huge unofficial support from TomTom groups and forums out there.
- The TT is great for international travel being very popular overseas with maps and new corrections available all over the internet.

Overall it was the price that sold me on TomTom. :D

5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Great GPS Unit   November 26, 2007

I purchased this unit for my wife(a real-estate agent). I did a lot of comparisions and read a ton of reviews on GPS units, leaving money out of the picture I focused on two things that she needs/uses on a daily basis. Itinerary(multiple addresses) and two possible saftey features. This allows up to 10 addresses for an itinerary that she can rank in her order, This was probably the main reason. Second was safety, this has a buddy system, which allows another tomtom owner to see where you are. Now we have not used this or tested it yet, but it does have some capability for me to track the device(will do in the future). I could not find any other device that allows any sort of tracking/locating. So this won out. The device works great, she loves it. We used it for two vacations and it worked flawless, did not give me the route I wanted to take for our trip to N.C.(which no GPS unit would have been able to do, because I go a specific route), but was still extremely helpful. For our other vacation, I had no clue where I was going and it did a perfect job. It does not say street names, but that is a preference that makes no difference. For the money it is perfect, and I really did not see any other reason to purchase a more expensive model, did not need another mp3 player or photo viewer. I would have gladly spent more if it was needed, but I needed GPS for a real-estate agent, and I could not find anything that was better than the tom tom one V2. (I am not considering buying the V3)
Thanks to all who took the time to leave a review it helped me tremendously!
