The map is weak March 13, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased this unit for my girlfriend and have been testing it for the past few days. However, after using it I must say that it falls short of my expectations. The map for the Houston area is somewhat outdated - as an example I was told to take a left on Main Street - which wasn't possible because of the metrorail running through the center of Main Street (it's been there for at least 3 years). When inputing street numbers the unit does not take you to the exact location but rather to an approximate location. I asked to go to a number at JFK Blvd. close to Intercontinental airport and the unit took me past the number up to the terminal area at the airport instead. Lastly, I was very close to a restaurant (1-2 miles) and asked to be given directions - the unit queried if I had a time frame to get there - I pressed no, assuming that it would take me the shortest distance, but instead it routed me via the freeway system (which is at least 8-10 miles).
I haven't had much experience with car GPS units but have used an aviation Garmin while on a trip to NYC. The Garmin would usually ask shortest distance or shortest time, maybe I didn't set the TomTom unit up, but by stating that time frame doesn't matter the assumption would be that it would take you the shortest distance. The Garmin was much more accurate and much more user friendly. Obviously the cost difference of $4K vs. $300 may have something to do with that.

Great little helper in the car. Sometimes, however sometimes you need to over-ride the directions if you know a better route.

I received this for a gift and right out of the box it's fantastic! I was afraid to trust it but I have taken it on some long distance runs in the country and in the city and it has taken me to the front door and back, I plan to purchase more as gifts for my family members. Buy it from Amazon! It's still priced at $400-$500 in the stores for the same thing.

TomTom is the best sat navigation I have found on the market. Highly recommended
Great little device! March 11, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wasn't looking for alot of bells & whistles. Just get me where I want to go by the fastest route. The TT One does that very well. The new maps are very up to date in the areas I've been in; not perfect, but what map is? The on-line connection had a few minor glitches, but that doesn't effect how it works in my car. It is nice to be able to pre-plan routes by using the USB connection to my computer. Overall, a very nice basic navigator at a reasonable price.
