2 out of 5 stars Tom Tom -- Not Not   February 21, 2007

At work, we use a Garmin, however, I wanted to give Tom Tom a try and found it to be really not to the standard of the Garmin. In addition, my friend has the Nuvi 350 and we took it on a trip and it was easy to use, good graphics, text to speech is good, just an overall good product. This goes for the Garmin that we have at work.

The Tom Tom One that I purchased was really subpar. There is no text to speech with street names. The Tom Tom says, "In 300 yards, take the next right." Also, the Tom Tom said their were resturants and hotels at an intersection and there were none to be found. Also, my Tom Tom dropped from my windshield when I was taking a turn. And last, the graphics are not very good. It does not even have my address on the map.

I would not recommend the Tom Tom... Spend the extra and get the Garmin Nuvi. Oh, the Tom Tom computer downloads were extremely difficult to work.

Hopes this helps,
JR

A friend of mine bought this today, and we set it up together. The TomTom ONE is remarkably user-friendly, extremely easy to set up, and intuitive to operate.

The screen features a nice "driving view" that was unavailable in GPS systems at the time I bought my GPS; this view is more 3D, very easy to read and quite appealing. For the price, it seems to be an incredible value.

The TomTom ONE kit comes with a USB cable that hooks up to your computer and a CD that can be used to manage it over the computer, giving greater flexibility in management. My old GPS can only be managed from the console in my car.

Seeing the capabilities of this portable GPS system, I wished I would have not had a different GPS installed in my vehicle, but instead purchased this unit. The TomTom ONE can be transported and used in rental cars on trips, or in friends' cars, and there are no worries about it being stolen, as it is small enough to stow away in your purse. Versatile, easy to use, inexpensive---what more could you want in an entry-level GPS?

5 out of 5 stars plug and go!   February 14, 2007

I love this little "back seat driver", for once I don't have to second guess or wonder if it really knows where it is going. My husband (a police officer) sometimes takes it with him to work, he got into a chase and was able to call out his location at every turn. Which is normally done by memory or drive fast and hope to see street names at the same time. Now he thinks it should be standard equipment for all cruiser.

We love the TomTom. It is very simple to use. We particularly like the patient voice which very seldom becomes irritated with our poor tech skills. Only complaint was the voice can become muted without our knowledge, and we passed our tournoff point. We read the directions and it told us how to turn voice back on, and we were directed to turn around and back we went to our destination.

We loaned the unit to a out-of-town relative, who said he would never hhave gotten to the train station using a standard map. TomTom took him right to the door.
