4 out of 5 stars Garmin Mapsource Topo   January 22, 2007

I found this product to be very easy to use, and load into my GPS. It is quite detailed, perhaps more than I expected. I occasionally come across either errors, in road placement, or in some cases it simply isn't up-to-date. However, this is not common enough to be a major issue for me. For the money, I am glad I purchased this. It sure makes my GPS more useful. It is not as detailed as the USGS maps, but, not bad!

Stick to the paper maps, the GPS is great, the software is worthless.

4 out of 5 stars adequate maps, fairly easy to use   January 12, 2007

Although not as detailed of topos as I would like, it is adequate to show the relief here in Colorado or Utah. Broken into sections, some smaller or larger, presumably based on the number of points necessary to define the contours, rivers, etc. My garmin rinos have plenty of memory to hold more topo info than you could ever need in one session.

The rino frequently gets an incorrect datapoint or breaks the route into multiple pieces when in canyon or mountainous terrain. It's nice to be able to delete totally errant points to figure out how far you actually went and accurately depict a route, save it, etc. but it's still annoying that it doesn't seem to have a way to graft the fragments back together.

You can save a graphic (tiff I believe) image of the topo with a route on it suitable for printing or emailing. Although servicable, this is not the tool's strong point. It would be nice if it had better printing / publishing capabilities for documenting routes or just having a backup or more convenient large printed map to refer to instead of a tiny little screen on a rino.

It would also be nice if it had a way to save route or waypoint data in an open text based csv type format. I don't get the impression that import/export is a capability of this software... it's garmin specific but at least you can save things.

One question I had was about how to merge waypoints or routes from two different sessions or units with the software and it's not clear how well this will work. I did manage to pull a route out of a rino, load in different maps into the rino with the original route, but this is a cumbersome way to try to merge data.

In conclusion, the software is servicable and well worth the price. The data seems reasonably accurate (I often see gps elevations hundreds of feet different from actual on uneven terrain) but not necessarily really current (like if a river or road changes routes or names). You'll likely still want other software or maps for route planning or as backup.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Interstate Improvments   January 10, 2007

After I received the mapping software for my Venture CX I downloaded the latest updates for the map and my GPS. I was disappointed to find that several major freeway improvements were missing from the map. The Interstate 494 bridge across the Mississippi River and 4 miles of Interstate 35E are missing. These improvements were completed many years ago. It makes you wonder what else is missing. Also, I live in Minnesota which is on the border of the US East and US West maps. When moving around the map, the software causes you to keep switching the CD's in the drive. Very annoying! I was able to copy both CD's to my hard drive and alter the window's registry to look in that folder for both sets of files. No more switching or using the CD's. That was great! Other than the missing roads I am very happy with the mapping software. It easy for me to use and I am a first time user of this type of software.

This item includes topo maps for every inch of ground in the continental US, Alaska, and Hawaii, and you can choose to load them into your computer in managable portions- you don't have to load the whole thing, which is great, especially if your storage space is limited. And with trip and waypoint manager, working with the map and loading only what you need and want onto your Garmin GPS is a snap! The only downside: You pay for topos of the entire US whether you need/want them or not.
