3 out of 5 stars Harder to use than Garmin   December 29, 2007

I had a Garmin C330 stolen so I bought this one. Harder to use, maps are not up to date. Highlight of use - I am heading to a restaurant, driving 60 mph in the middle of the freeway when i hear the "YOU HAVE ARRIVED" noise...That's when I realized that I made a subpar choice.

4 out of 5 stars MAGELLEN ROADMATE 2000   December 19, 2007

Ok wow bad reviews!!!. I have used this unit for 6 months in 6 states. I love it. It has been correct most all of the time. I found the highway exit information a little out of date. It might list only some of the gas stations and restaurants even still it provided useful information. i work in field service and use this device to find my customers. I would say it locates them 99% of the time. The database seems as accurate as mapquest. If mapquest doesnt show it the GPS probably wont either. I thought the maps were upgradeable, now im a bit scared about doing that after reading these posts. For $199 i think its a great deal.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy magellan products   December 1, 2007

I received a Magellan Roadmate 2 years ago, the unit suggested I update the maps, the maps are now seriously out of date. Tech support said they have no updated maps for such an "OLD" unit. They offered a discount on buying a new unit which would have been more expensive than a competitor's new unit. I WILL NEVER BUY MAGELLAN AGAIN

2 out of 5 stars GPS for dummies   November 27, 2007

It's a pretty basic GPS unit. The menus are few and easy and the touch screen is nice. The voice is not annoying. However, I wish it would give more choices when selecting a POI. If I choose "McDonalds", there may be five in town and I would like to be able to select which McDonalds I want to go to, rather than it selecting it for me.

My biggest gripe is the AC adapter that shipped with my unit does not work - it must be powered from the car adapter. I would suggest setting the 'auto power off' to something other than the default 'never'. Otherwise the unit will drain itself while "sleeping" until you get it plugged in again.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T GIVE AS GIFT! dead unit & worst customer service   November 23, 2007

This unit never turned on or worked and I made the mistake of trying to address this through Magellan instead of the retailer b/c I wanted to save on shipping. My husband called Magellan on Oct 15, was on the phone for 20 minutes + and was told that if he sent in the unit, they would repair it; he responded, why should I end up with a refurbished unit when I bought it new? After much waiting on hold, he was asked for his credit card # and was told they would ship a unit and then he could return the old unit. Weeks passed, he called again and was assured it would ship soon, but that there was a small delay.

Now it has been five weeks, and he called again this week on Nov 22. They had no record of the transaction # or his credit card info and he spent another 20 minutes on hold with someone in India. He finally hung up and called back and asked to speak to someone in the US. They don't have anyone. He was again asked for his credit card info and assured that they would ship it soon, and that we would even be "upgraded" to a new model.

We are so frustrated and my husband said we should just throw this away (and we DON'T have money to throw away!) ... it has been a nightmare since it never would turn on and then the waiting on hold for promises that customer service never delivered on and waiting for a new unit. Please don't buy this as a gift for someone, they might never forgive you.
