5 out of 5 stars An Overall Best Buy. Great value for such a low price!   February 4, 2007

Ok, I've been using this little beauty in California for a while now and have been very impressed by it. For those who say addresses are missing I don't think they're using it right. For instance to find 500 Main St you first have to enter Main or Main St and hit search then it will ask you for the intersection or address and that's when you enter 500. So far I've saved all of my friends addresses from Sacramento to San Jose and it has found every address. The points of interest that come pre loaded are amazing. No GPS in the world has every POI but this one has so many of them and all the important ones like ATM machines and gas stations are in there. It even gives you phone numbers of restaurants and businesses. My friends Garmin c340 looses satellite reception in the downtown area so I took my X-930 down there to test it out and it never lost reception because the X-930 can connect to up to 10 different satellites at a time. You can check how many you're connected to and around my town I connect to about 7 or 8 satellites at a time. The voice command is loud and clear and gives you plenty of warning before you need to make a turn. It also re-routes very fast. I can't believe anyone would give this GPS a bad review. The features can be a little tricky at first but if the user manual doesn't help you can call ViaMichelin customer service and they answer right away and are very helpful with walking you through the features. I would buy the X-930 over any $500-$600 GPS on the market today. The X-930 is a small, powerful, straight forward, easy to use, plug and play system. It doesn't play MP3's but that's what my Ipod is for. I had high hopes for this product and it has surpast my expectations!

The price is right for this little unit and if you are looking for an on-board navigation system this unit is for you. The voice is loud and clear, and the unit is easy to setup and start using quickly.

On the downside is that this unit goes to sleep if it is not "working" for you, so if you just want to see the GPS coordinates change as you drive, pay attention because it will suddenly turn off.

Also this unit does not update frequently enough to make it useful in pedestrian mode. Anyone heard of Geo caching? This is not the unit for you if you are looking for a geocaching GPS.

The last disappointment of this unit is the cumbersome search for any POI. WalMart should be listed as a POI, and I have yet to find one listed. WalMart and gas stations...what else does anyone need?

The Michelin X-930 is a fantastic value. It works right out of the box and importantly it has the latest NAVTEQ (the best US system) maps loaded.

I did a lot of research before ordering this GPS and it does everything it says it will do. I did not want a music system or any of the other additional bells and whistles, I wanted a straight forward, simple GPS to navigate from point A to point B. This GPS delivers.

The voice cues are clear and easy to understand. The route re-computing is quick and accurate. The accuracy is uncanny. Certainly if you know special short cuts, it may not choose your favorite route -- but it gets you there.

I am really impressed that Michelin could undercut the market and make this unit available at one-half the cost of any comparable unit I could find.

I rate this unit 5 stars. In comarison with other GPS units, it performs the task at half the price.

2 out of 5 stars Not too bad when it worked, but there are better.   January 26, 2007

I bought my unit from J&R Music World for $199 with free shipping. I was immediatly impressed with the small size of the unit and the clear display. It picked up a GPS signal almost immdiatly and seemed to be fairly accurate. The problems started the second day, where it would not pick up a GPS signal at all. All the bars read 0. I waited about ten minutes before I tried a couple of soft resets, and finally got it to work. On the third day, I had the same problem, but even a soft reset didn't help with total lack of GPS signal. I emailed the Viamichelin customer suport with the my problem, but they sent me a reply that was right out of the manual. Hey, I read the manual and know how to mount it in a car. After much frustration, I removed the SD card and reinserted it to see if this would work. It didn't, but after about 3 or 4 soft resets it finally showed a GPS signal. At this point I decided to return it to J&R as defective, and they are sending me another one. Hopefully this one will work OK. Also, the mini USB port on the bottom is in a bad location as it forces you to mount the unit a couple of inches higher than usualwhen using the cigarette lighter power supply. Also this port is not reinforced and kind of flimsy.

It's kind of like running a computer that still has Windows ME. In other words even if it's working fine now, your next problem is just around the corner. Since the X-930 is a MS Windows based product (Windows CE 4.2) be warned.

Another problem I was having with the unit was that it was a little slow with its audio instructions. I would be passed the turn before it would tell me I should turn. Fortunately it does have an arrow screen that warns you ahead of time when you should be turning, so you could anticipate. The voice served merely as reassurance that you turned when you should have. Also it would tell you that you have arrived at your destination and show 0 feet, when I was a couple hundred yards away.

I also own an Magellan Roadmate 700, which has none of these problems. It always gives me ample warning when I should be turning, and is more accurate with its mapping functions. Although the Magellan listed at around $700 you can find them under $300 right now. Unfortunately, the Magellan is a too big to fit comfortably in a pocket, and doesn't have a rechargable battery.

I haven't received my replacement X-930 yet, but remain hopefull that the problems I had were from the previous unit being defective. If I made my living driving I would probably spend the extra for a Magellan, but If the replacement works as advertised I might change my mind, but until then, I can only give it 2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressed First Time GPS User   January 19, 2007

My first impression is WOW! At $200, no tax and free shipping this unit is a steal. I ordered it on Monday and it arrived on Tuesday! I live in Philadelphia,PA and it shipped from somewhere nearby in Pennsylvania.

After I opened the box, I was surprised to find that the unit was already fully charged. I turned it on and inserted the smartmedia card. I was able to set it up and use it without ever opening the manual. The unit is very intuitive even to a first-time GPS user like myself. It has a simple menu system that you navigate by touching the screen. It was easy to set-up and save my first destination as one of my favorites.

While driving or walking (you can change this mode in one of the sub-menus), the display constantly shows:
* how far until your next turn
* direction that you are heading (N,S, etc.)
* distance to your destination in miles (or you can change it to kilometers)
* estimated time until you arrive at your destination

All the places that I used it for directions to tonight are places for which I already know the directions. However, I used the unit to get an idea of how it works so that I will be more familiar with it methodology when I am going somewhere that is new to me. The unit gave good directions. The voice was clear in announcing turns before and as I arrived at them. I also thought it recalculated my route fairly quickly whenever i decided to ignore its directions.

It has lots of points of interest already saved in the unit like restaurants, parks, hotels, etc. You can search these categories based on your current location (as calculated by the unit), city, etc. It also has lots of sub-menus for you to adjust features like display (2d or 3d), brightness, language, etc. for those of you who like to customize things but it also works fine out of the box.

I waited over a month to find a unit at this price point without a rebate. My wait is over and I'm very happy with my purchase!
