great product January 21, 2008
This is a great product. Garmin should package this with their GPS especially many of us travel with our GPS on business trips. I have used this Portable Friction Mount in a number of rental cars. It has been working beautifully. One advise is to make sure that it is NOT sitting on a film of dust on the dash.

Garmin does not reveal in it's instruction manual that it has an alternative to it's Suction Cup Mount, which is the Portable Friction Mount which can best be described as a "Bean Bag Mount".
Had some problems with the Suction Cup Mount. Sometimes it fell off the window while driving. Also according to reports breaking into a cars and stealing a GPS is very prevalent. The Suction Cup leaves a ring on the window that would indicate to a thief that a car has a high probability of having a GPS system stored somewhere in the car.
The Portable Friction Mount is easily placed on the top of the dash and does leave any marks and of course will not fall off the window of your car.
No Downside January 21, 2008
The best way to mount the Garmin. For me, it has never once slid around, very secure. Plus, you can mount it closer--easier to get at. Better to get it into your line-of-sight, too. Then, when you're getting out, you can just pick the whole thing up, not leaving a suction cup mount as a clue that there is a GPS hidden in the car. Don't forget to unplug it so as to not leave another clue.

I bought this mount for my VW GTI since I didn't want to get a permanent mount or stick a suction cup on the windshield. The mount is much more stable than I thought it would be; it stays in place even during hard cornering. The base actually flexes so you can mold it to the shape of your dashboard. The dashboard in my GTI is not flat - I think that helps keep it on place. Also, the fact that you can just grab it and set it down in the passenger side without leaving a trace that you have a GPS is great for security.
Never falls off January 21, 2008
This is the 2nd one I've purchased (this was a gift to my nephew). In my last 5 yrs of using it I've been very satisfied. All road bumps do is move my GPS a little on my dashboard, a minor problem that I can easily address while driving. The beanbag mount also allow me to easily hide my GPS when I go into the stores. Definitely, well worth the money.
