5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Rocks!   November 4, 2007
This is an awesome GPS device. It is very easy to use and offers alternatives when asked for. The many options incuding language, alternative routes, avoiding tolls, points of interest really makes getting around so easy. This is my second tom-tom; my first was stolen! So, be careful and don't leave it in your car!

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without one   November 2, 2007
Wow... I've never had a problem with directions. Unfamiliar places usually required a Google map and that was it. When I ordered the TomTom One it was after a long wait. Did I really need a GPS? The answer is a wholehearted YES! It simply works great. On a recent trip to NV, I loaded in the addresses to all the places I knew I was going. When I got off the plane and into the car, I tapped a few buttons and I was on my way. The best part about owning one of these is that directions are now a no-brianer. You can focus on driving. The safety level is much better than fumbling with and viewing a paper map. Quick glances, or just listening to the spoken directions, lets you keep your eyes on the road more. When you get to one destination, a few more taps and you're on your way to the next place. You can store tons of "Favorites" and even connect to your computer (cable not included) to plan and transfer sophisticated routes with many along-the-way stops. (People in sales, are you paying attention?) Programming an address is easy. Zip code first, street name and then address number. TomTom usually has the name you are looking for within the first three characters. Route calculation is fast. Get off track - no problem. It takes about 4-5 seconds to recaclulate and commence with the updated route. And, it doesn't call you 'dummy' for going off course. In fact, you'll find yourself confidently taking a different-than-calculated route just to have it get you back in the right direction. It sounds silly, but actually it gives you confidence to explore other places or routes you might not have. The maps are accurate, detailed and the same as the more expensive TomTom units. Dirt roads, center medians - all of the little details that you wouldn't expect are there.

Don't let a refurbished unit make you hesitant about saving some $$$. Everything in the box looks (and smells) factory new. If the box didn't have a label indicating 'factory reconditioned', I never would have known. And I'm a technogeek. The warranty is 1 year - same as a new unit. And TomTom support is fast, knowledgeable and very friendly (I called with questions about future map updates). Run the thing often for the first few months to ferret out any problems. The suction cup mount is sturdy and stays very secure to the windshield. I like mine in the lower left hand corner just above the dash, not blocking any of my field of vision. Don't bother with the expensive home charger. The included USB cable charges the battery when connected to your computer. You can buy a USB to 120VAC adaptor for about $6. Or, use the car adaptor. Also, run the unit on the battery frequently and plug-in when the battery low indicator comes on. A friend trashed his battery by leaving it plugged into the car adaptor all the time.

So are there any negatives? I guess that a bigger screen would be nice, but I could have that for about $150 more with the XL version. A bigger screen would mean a bigger touch keyboard for my fingers. And it'd be really nice if the unit would turn on and off with the car when plugged in to the car charger.

So, if you have been thinking about a portable GPS, I can highly recommend the TomTom One. It works great, the price is right, and it's just plain fun. Are there 'better' units out there? Maybe. But not at this price!

I purchased the Tom Tom navigation system and it amazing. It was great value and I cannot imagine travelling without it. It arrived quickly and although it was refurbished it looks just like new.

Don't get me wrong. I do love TomTom One. All of my friends use TomTom. I just cannot believe TomTom showed such little care in their refurbished items. When the refurbished TomTom One arrived, it didn't work right out of box. I typed the zipcode when I live, but it returned the wrong city in the wrong state. Sure I got refund from Amazon, but it's really a bummer to receive a refurbished item that were broken so obviously. And I'm not alone. Feel free to read other reviews on this refurbished item. They had bad experiences, too.

4 out of 5 stars versatile little unit   October 30, 2007

The Tom Tom does what is says it will and does it with gusto. It includes, 3d graphics, points of interest that can be downloaded, many downloadable voices and map sets, it has bluetooth traffic updates, but that feature comes at great cost to the average buyer who has to sign up for two programs, one with your cellular provider and one with TomTom to use it. No scratches, dents or defects...like new.
I would have scored it a five but the "Free" promotions and downloads were all expired by the time I received the unit. Paying for use of the features turns me off some. Otherwise a great unit at a great price.
